We all see the high-tech digital bus shelters in our major cities, but what about the non-urbanized areas, the rural bus stops, and the suburban bus stops? The places where many of the bus stops consist of a bus stop sign in the ground. “The most rural counties are shown to have the highest percentages of older adults and people with a disability.” The Rural Transit Fact Book points out the disability and age statistics. These are the people who need some help. That help may be as simple as an ADA-compliant bus bench. Benches are not just a convenience; they're a bridge to a more equitable transportation system. The elderly, pregnant women, people with disabilities – all deserve a place to sit and wait with dignity. A lack of accessible seating at bus stops is a major barrier to public transit use for people with disabilities, according to the NCDJ. Budget is always a consideration. We hear that “No public mass transit system in the country generates enough revenue to support itself”. “They all need a mix of subsidies to keep fares affordable, especially for the low-income riders that depend on the systems the most”. Many cities and towns simply cannot afford the added expense of a bus bench operation, but options are available—COA’s Public-Private Partnerships can shoulder the expenses and the maintenance in exchange for the privilege of selling sponsorships. Local businesses sponsor the benches as a way of marketing their business to the community. The community wins by having a more comfortable and welcoming public transit experience for riders, while saving taxpayer dollars and supporting local job creation It’s a win-win program. Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority Tim Bellamy's latest article reflects on the discussions at last week's Accessible Transport Policy Commission meeting, focusing on concerns outlined by the Motability Foundation regarding the #transportaccessibilitygap and the need for an #AccessibleTransportCharter... "Highlighting the indispensable role of #transport in #societalconnectivity and #economicprosperity, the article underscores the persistent challenges faced by #disabled individuals due to the inadequacies of the current #transportinfrastructure. Despite the substantial potential customer base represented by the 14 million disabled individuals in the UK, our transport system often fails to address their unique needs, resulting in a significant accessibility gap. The article emphasises the necessity of a multifaceted approach, encompassing coverage expansion, affordability measures, #workforcediversity, and enhanced communication, to foster #inclusivetransport systems that benefit all members of society, thereby unlocking significant socio-economic value while narrowing the transport accessibility gap". #accessibility #transportforall #transportpolicy https://lnkd.in/e3JJJSFk

National Centre for Accessible Transport (ncat) were proud to be joined by Andy Street and Clive Gilbert for the signing of the Accessible Transport Charter which aims to amplify the voices of disabled people, ensuring that transport services cater to the needs of everyone. Prepared by Policy Connect and the Accessible Transport Policy Commission which work to remove transport barriers for disabled people across the UK, the Charter encourages local political leaders to work towards closing the transport accessibility gap - which refers to the Motability Foundation's research finding that disabled people make 38% fewer journeys than non-disabled people. According to the Charter, train stations often lack accessibility for disabled people. When coupled with misplaced refuse bins, uneven pavements, and a shortage of level crossings and appropriate signage, these factors can contribute to the widening #accessibility gap. Bus Mobility Report: How Accessible Is Public Transport in 2024? The 2024 Mobility Report from Bus Users highlights significant disparities in accessibility across public transport services in the UK. The report emphasises the need for better staff training, improved infrastructure, and a focus on providing reliable assistance for disabled passengers. Public transport plays a crucial role in promoting independence, yet many people with disabilities face barriers when trying to use buses and other services. https://lnkd.in/dX9zn-Z8 What improvements do you think are essential to make public transport more accessible? #PublicTransport #MobilityInclusion #DisabilityAccess

🚨 New Research Alert! 🚨 New research by Tom Mace and Tom J. at Transport for the North is a fascinating deep dive into transport related social exclusion in the North of England. For more insights, check out the link below. 📊🔗 #TransportResearch #CommunityImpact #NorthEnglandTransport #betterbuses #transportforthenorth Bus Users UK
New research out today reveals more than two in five disabled residents, carers, and low-income residents in a range of areas of the North of England are facing #SocialExclusion because of inadequate and poorly performing #transport systems. Our 'Transport and social exclusion in the North in 2023/24' report, lead by Tom J. and Tom Mace, also shows: ☑ #Bus services in the North have been cut by more than 30% since 2010 – more than in the rest of England ☑ The impacts of bus service cuts have fallen disproportionately on lower income residents, disabled residents, and carers. The survey demonstrated how the lack of viable local #publictransport options for everyday journeys increases the strain on household finances and reduces independence. Our Chief Executive Martin Tugwell said: "Local public transport is the foundation to grow economies, provide more sustainable travel choices, and deliver a good quality of life for all." Earlier this year, Transport for the North published a new report stating nearly half of disabled residents, carers and those from low-income households in the North of England face social exclusion due to inadequate and poorly performing transport systems. At Osmodal we not only understand the commercial drivers for implementing effective #farestrategies and the technology that support them, but we spend time exploring the social context; the human elements. Many #transitoperators globally support #concessions – often more concessionary travellers, than those paying standard fares. If you’re involved in planning public transportation, how much consideration do you give to your concessionary travellers? We’d love to explore how Operators can work to address this increasingly important ridership. Read the report? Comments below 👇

The Healthy Streets Scorecard encourages London boroughs to improve #Accessibility. We're working as part of the Healthy Streets coalition to develop a metric to improve parking access for #Disabled people who need to use private vehicles, and to find data sources to develop a pavement accessibility metric too: "The Healthy Streets Scorecard is all about improving health and wellbeing for everyone in London. All of the current indicators are important for accessibility, but without specific accessibility indicators, Disabled people’s mobility is not being supported as well by the Healthy Streets Scorecard as it should be. We want to improve how the Healthy Streets Scorecard works for Disabled people by including meaningful, specific, accessibility indicators." https://lnkd.in/eezNJRRy

November is Accessible Parking Awareness Month. ❓Have you ever parked illegally in a designated accessible parking spot? ❓Have you ever used someone else’s accessible parking permit or one not legally authorized for your use? ❌DON’T Some things you should know: ♿️Accessible parking permits are only for people with disabilities and are not to be lent or given to anyone else for any reason; ♿️If the permit-holder doesn’t leave the vehicle at a destination the vehicle must be parked in a regular parking spot, not in a designated accessible spot; ♿️Accessible parking permits are not inherited by anyone; ♿️If the permit-holder is able to walk a short distance, they should consider leaving the accessible parking spot for someone in a wheelchair who needs the wider space; ♿️Some disabilities are invisible. Be thoughtful, considerate and responsible. “While some may think having an accessible parking permit is a “perk,” those of us who have one wish we didn’t need one.” - South Fraser Active Living #accessibilityparkingawareness #accessibilityparking #accessibility #sparcbc #responsibleuse #southfraseractiveliving #equalaccesscollective
