#cradletograveurbanism Walkable communities create ‘cradle to grave’ environments. These environments allow for access to amenities for all. “Seniors have the most to gain from pedestrian and cycling improvements—yet they often feel threatened by changes that provide alternatives to driving. “ A Cnu.org article provides ways to include seniors in active transportation planning. #aginginplace #activeliving #seniorliving #equity

🚗 Only around a fifth (22%) of Bristol's residents think that their streets are not dominated by moving or parked motor vehicles. 🚶♀️ 🚶♀️ ♿ Over half (55%) of residents walk or wheel at least five days a week. Around 197.6 million miles were walked or wheeled by Bristol residents in 2023 alone. Half (49%) of residents want to walk or wheel more (only 2% say less), compared to 29% who want to drive less (only 13% say more). 🌳 Eight in ten (82%) say that having more parks or green spaces close to home would encourage more walking and wheeling. Two thirds (66%) think fewer vehicles on their street would help them walk, cycle or wheel more. 🚸 Four in ten (42%) of residents think the level of safety for children walking or wheeling is good in their local area. 🏠 Two thirds (65%) of disabled residents say they feel welcome and comfortable walking, wheeling or spending time on the streets of their neighbourhood. -- Sustrans' Walking and Cycling Index (formerly Bike Life) goes from strength to strength and in its tenth year the emphasis placed on the role of walking and wheeling is very welcome. The findings above are some of the many I found interesting within the Bristol report for 2023. They tell a clear story of both the valuable role walking and wheeling already plays within so many people's lives and how much more there is still to do to make streets greener, safer and more welcoming to a wider range of people. Read more from Bristol below. The tragic death of business leader Avtar Saini after being hit by a cab while cycling is a stark reminder that our roads remain unsafe for cyclists. As financial planners, roads and transport safety has implications for the advice we provide clients. Cycling is a healthy, environmentally friendly and increasingly popular mode of transportation. However, many roads and highways simply aren't built with cyclist safety in mind. This exposes cyclists to unnecessary and unacceptable risks of injury or even death through no fault of their own. Of course, nothing can undo the grief of lives lost or changed forever by traffic accidents. But we owe it to citizens like Mr. Saini to make our roads safer. Properly protected bike lanes, lower speed limits, public awareness campaigns, and enforcement of existing laws can dramatically improve safety outcomes. Safety gear for riders is also important to prevent or reduce injury. As advisers, we can raise awareness on cycling safety issues. We can encourage clients to equip themselves and their families properly. We can urge companies we advise to advocate for employee safety for cycling staff. We can provide coverage advice for disability or death resulting from cycling or traffic accidents, should the unforeseeable happen. While the financial costs pale compared to the emotional ones, we do our communities a disservice if we do not speak up for much-needed policy changes and infrastructure investments in roads safety. This would honor lives like Mr. Saini's and prevent more tragedies on our roads. #RoadsSafety #CyclistSafety #BikeLanes #SpeedLimits #FinancialPlanning #intel #avtarsaini

Moving more is great for our mental health – but it can be difficult to get started. Stephanie Lee, resident cyclist here at Be What You See, pedals to and from our UseSpace office each week – rain or shine (more often rain, let’s be honest Manchester) ☔☀️ For those considering cycling as a mental health booster or sustainable transport alternative, here are Steph’s top tips: 1️⃣ Start simple: Source an inexpensive, pre-loved or rental bike to test the waters. 2️⃣ Scout your route: Go for a trial run during quieter times and chat with fellow cyclists for insider tips. 3️⃣ Explore perks: Check if your workplace offers Cycle-to-Work schemes for tax savings on gear and upgrades. 4️⃣Get equipped: Prepare yourself with essentials like a helmet and lights for safety, and panniers for convenient commuting. 5️⃣ Seek support: If you're new to cycling, there are community organisations that offer courses and support. Here’s one for people living in Manchester: https://lnkd.in/dgaRK6ia And who knows, soon you could win your very own yellow jersey 🚴 💛 #mentalhealthawarenessweek #mentalhealth #cycling
