🎧 Just listened to the new podcast #Havbrukslære on smolt production. Highly recommend it! 🔟 years ago, before the «era of mechanical delousing», smolt quality was a major focus because most mortalities occurred after seawater transfer. 🐟  Now, with mechanical delousing operations and mortalities happening throughout the year, I feel the focus on robust smolt has been forgotten. Today, smolts are produced at different sizes, and terms like large smolts and post-smolts are common. Production methods (RAS, FT), temperatures, smolt sizes, and timing of sea transfer vary widely. This evolving landscape raises questions: How do all these new smolt production strategies impact fish health and welfare❓ 🎙️ Prof. Turid Mørkøre, Prof. @Odd-Ivar Lekang, & Erik Sterud discuss this and more in the new podcast from NMBU. 💡 On the final question, can smolts be produced at fast growth with good health... Yes, but we need to focus on biology. Ultimately, it’s not the weight of the smolts that matters, but the final weight and quality at harvest. https://lnkd.in/d4KKejt6
