🌊🔬 Gill Health in Salmon Farming: Key Insights from Dr. Hamish Rodger , 2nd Keynote speaker. Gill challenges are among top 2 health concerns in Salmon production, with significant economic and biological impacts across Norway, Scotland, and Ireland. 🔍 The root causes of gill damage are diverse and interconnected, ranging from harmful algal toxins and stinging plankton to bacterial and viral infections. The complexity is further compounded by climate change and nutrient runoff, algal blooms sith exposure to toxic elements and oxygen depletion. 💡 To enhance fish health and reduce economic losses, we need to focus on innovative solutions: implementing improved net cleaning technologies, developing better vaccines, and investing in genetic selection for gill and skin robustnes says Dr. Rodger. Effective management demands a sophisticated approach, including better early warning systems, advanced detection methods, and robust training for staff on identifying and mitigating planktonic threats. Hamish Rodger, ended his talk with encouraging young scientists to give attention to this rising problem in Salmon Aquaculture. #FishHealth #Aquaculture #SalmonFarming #GillDiseases #InnovationInAquaculture PatoGen AS Nofima

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing problem, and it is important to address the misuse of antibiotics in all areas, including aquaculture (#fishfarming). In crowded farming conditions, antibiotics are often used to prevent illness, not just treat infection, contributing to the spread of #AMR. As the demand for seafood (and with that, aquaculture) grows globally, we need better antimicrobial surveillance and stewardship in the industry. Tune in to our One World, One Health podcast with OHT’s Dr. Thomas Van Boeckel, as he discusses how the misuse of antibiotics in aquaculture is fueling #AMR worldwide. #waterquality determine the success or failure of an aquaculture operating because it affects all the vital processes carried out fish such as respiration, feeding, metabolism and reproduction MUST measure , record and manage #waterquality parameters through the growing season to avoid any stress and Infection with diseases #Waterquality parameters divided into Physical parameters like : ✔️Temperature ✔️sanility ✔️turbidity ✔️transpancy ✔️water depth AND Chemical parameters like ✔️dissolved oxygen ✔️Alkalinity & Hardness ✔️PH ✔️ nitrogen ✔️Nitrite , Nitrate , Ammonia ✔️hydrogen sulfide ✔️carbon dioxide AND Biological parameters like ✔️bacteria, phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish Each water factor has a Suitable range that must be known to decrease occurrence of diseases I will share with you each factor and how it affects the fish just write interested in comments to get the summery of every factor I will share😍 #keeplearning_keepgrowing #aquaculture #waterquality #fish

"Selection Criteria for Fish Fingerlings and Yearlings in Aquaculture" As aquaculture professionals, we understand the importance of selecting high-quality fish fingerlings and yearlings for our operations. The right selection criteria can make all the difference in ensuring robust growth, disease resistance, and efficient production. Key Criteria: 1. Genetic Pedigree: Prioritize fish with desirable traits like fast growth, high feed conversion efficiency, and disease resistance. 2. Genetic Diversity: Maintain genetic diversity to reduce the risk of inbreeding and promote healthy growth. 3. Phenotypic Characteristics: Select fish with good physical appearance, uniform size, and weight. 4. Growth Performance: Choose individuals with higher growth rates and consistent monitoring. 5. Health and Immunocompetence: Ensure disease-free status, robust immune systems, and vaccination programs. 6. Stress Response: Select fish with strong stress tolerance and minimal stress-related behaviors. 7. Environmental Adaptability: Ensure temperature tolerance and adaptability to local water conditions. By integrating these comprehensive selection criteria, we can ensure the success and sustainability of our aquaculture operations. Let's prioritize robust growth, disease resistance, and efficient production while promoting long-term sustainability and ethical practices in our industry. #Aquaculture #Sustainability #FishFarming #SelectionCriteria #Genetics #Health #Growth #StressResponse #EnvironmentalAdaptability
