APPLYING FOR CHEVENING? Your experience with Chevening will be highly individual and subjective, unique to your background and context. You may seem like the perfect candidate, but because of how Chevening evaluates applicants, you could still lose out. This is the strength of the Chevening process—it’s designed to uncover the potential that aligns with their criteria, not just the obvious choice. Here are some key tips that can help aspiring scholars: 1) Reflect deeply on your decision to pursue a master’s degree in the UK. There are other study options available globally, so you need to have a solid reason for choosing the UK beyond the fact that it’s a great opportunity for your career. Consider how studying in the UK connects to the field you’re in and whether there are any firms, organizations, or professionals there that would enrich your work experience or research. 2) Be intentional about what you want to study. While you don’t need to pursue the same field as your first degree, your proposed course of study should align with your professional experience. Chevening rarely sponsors ‘experiments’—your academic and career goals must be purposeful and well-thought-out. Ensure your choice of study has relevance not only to you but also to the field at large. Consider any gaps in the field that you wish to address and how your education will help fill them. 3) Focus on impact. Chevening scholars are known for their positive influence and commitment to making a difference. They are driven by a sense of purpose that goes beyond personal gain. When applying, always remember your “why”—the motivation behind your actions—and how you can use your skills to create a broader impact in your community, your field, and the world. #IAmChevening #ChosenforChevening #CheveningScholarship Chevening Awards
