This could be a career goal or a personal dream that gives you a genuine sense of purpose—a reason to feel fully alive and motivated to pursue it. It helps us rise early, ready to take things to the next level, and that’s the kind of drive we’re aiming to cultivate. On the other hand, when we’re doing things we don’t enjoy but feel obligated to do, it’s essential to prioritize finding reasons first, then the way will come. Trying things out—experimenting when possible—might just lead us to a better place in life. This principle has worked wonders for me. Fresh out of college, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted, but I knew what I didn’t want and it was this clarity that helped me narrow down my options, bringing me closer to what truly resonates. Those who can’t see the same things you do might say it can’t be done, but that doesn’t mean it’s unachievable—it only means it’s beyond their view. So, don’t let others’ doubts or limits define what’s possible for you. Instead, let their words become fuel to reach further. Seek advice, learn from others, but always come back to your vision. Becoming the Hero of Your Journey  About a year and a half ago, I made a life-altering decision: to become the hero of my own journey. I encouraged others to do the same, but this decision came from a deeply personal place. It was a time when my mom passed away—a profound loss that taught me an invaluable lesson: tomorrow is not promised. My mom was the most generous person I’ve ever known, and her passing made me reassess my life and priorities. In the wake of this realisation, I took a leap of faith and quit my 9-to-5 job. It was terrifying to step away from the structured routine that work provided, but I knew I needed to take control of my time and my life. Suddenly, the responsibility of organising my days and creating my path was entirely on me. No longer was I relying on a boss, a manager, or a company to provide that structure—I had to build it myself. During this time, I read a powerful book, Be Your Future Self Now. The premise is simple but transformative: if you have a vision of who you want to be in ten years, why not start acting like that person today? By doing so, you can bring that ideal version of yourself closer to reality. This shift in mindset changed everything for me. It pushed me to think differently, act with purpose, and take bold steps toward my future self. So, I want to challenge you: What would happen if you started acting like the person you want to become today? How would your decisions, actions, and plans change? You probably grew up without role models. You may have seen people you didn't want to be like and situations you'd never want to be in. It can feel like you're navigating life without a map, constantly trying to avoid pitfalls you've witnessed firsthand. But this adversity can also be a powerful catalyst for change. It teaches you what you don't want, which is just as valuable as knowing what you do want. Life is not about the cards you're dealt, but how you play them. I am a bit embarrassed to admit this, but I have never considered myself a person with a tremendous amount of grit and resilience. Don’t get me wrong, I have achieved a lot of cool things in my life and I have pushed through some tough times, but there are many times when I can look back and say, “hmm, I think I may have given up too soon.” For example, I shared a story on here about giving up on little league baseball because I got into it when I was younger than everyone else. That made it really hard and not fun, so I quit. In some keynotes I share a story about why I started my own improv group instead of moving to Chicago to try to work my way though the Second City program. The Cliff Notes version: I didn’t get accepted on my first two options, so I opted to stay in Philly instead. I also feel in my business that I have ended a number of promising initiatives over the years because they did not yield early results. Why do I share all this? It’s not about self-flagellation or seeking sympathy. Instead, I want to encourage you to consider your own journey. - Do you possess strong grit and resilience? - If so, how can you leverage that even more? - If not, what steps can you take to improve it? Personally, I’m focusing on two strategies: 1) Taking Small Steps: When I feel like giving up, instead of "digging deep" or "doubling down," I concentrate on taking one small step forward. 2) Identifying Key Factors: I’ve had successes in the past, and I’ve noticed three common threads: - The activity was fun. - I collaborated with friends or liked-minded people. - I had short-term goals to look forward to. This year has been something, hasn’t it? If you’re like me, you’ve faced your share of challenges — some that felt insurmountable. And yet, there were also moments of joy, often unexpected. Right? Or, was it just me? Now here we are in December, wondering where the time went as another year slips by. I’ve always believed in taking what life gives you and giving back generously. No matter how messy or overwhelming life gets, there’s always a glimmer of opportunity hiding within the chaos. That’s not to say it’s easy. Oh, it has not been easy, I can tell you that! Honestly, there are days when the idea of “finding opportunity” feels like a stretch, when life feels more sour than sweet. Sometimes you just want to scream. And that’s okay, too. (Seriously, it's okay) But here’s the thing: it’s often in those toughest moments — when everything feels like it’s falling apart — that we find out who we really are. Crisis tests us, and if we lean in with determination instead of despair, we grow. I mean we kind of have to. Looking back, the setbacks I once thought would break me ended up shaping my path. They taught me resilience, opened doors I never expected, and redefined how I measure success. Breaking Free from the “What Ifs”🌟 For the longest time, I found myself holding back on decisions that mattered to me. I’d set my mind on something, then let fear creep in, seeking validation from others and allowing their opinions to shape my choices. The “what ifs”dominated my thoughts, and before I knew it, I was no longer moving forward. But here’s what I’ve come to realize: No one can live my life or make my dreams happen but me. Seeking too many opinions led me nowhere. The turning point came when I decided to trust myself, to move forward with my plans without waiting for permission or approval. The True Meaning of Failure: A Catalyst for Growth Today's spin on the wheel of topics landed us on a conversation that truly resonates: the concept of 'failing.' But let's reframe this—failing is learning, an opportunity clothed in disguise. 🌀 Reflecting back to my middle school days, missing out on the junior high basketball team felt like a major setback. But rather than yielding to defeat, that moment propelled me into dedication—countless hours on the court until the night echoed with the sounds of rural Eastern North Carolina. It was a lesson in persistence, even though my basketball aspirations didn't pan out. 🗓️ Fast forward to the sales floor at Verizon, where a missed opportunity with a client was not just a lost sale, but a chance to refine our approach, to excel during the next interaction. It's a mindset that applies across all walks of life, from personal ambitions to professional endeavors. Running for county commissioner at a mere 20 years old seemed audacious, and losing that election could've been seen as failure. But those were stepping stones, building blocks that eventually led to my service as a state representative in New Hampshire. Every 'loss' was a lesson in disguise, each 'failure' a foothold leading to the next success. 👁️ It's about perception. When something doesn't work as planned, it's easy to dwell on it as a failure, but if we zoom out, it's essentially a microcosm within a larger journey.
