It is a dangerous race to the bottom. You fear, you, your loved ones are not safe even in your present Vigo/Prado. So you buy a larger vehicle still with an even more elevated front bumper. As car companies compete to make cars bigger, more dangerous, all of us are much worse off than those living in a society, city with mixed used real estate built car around world class, comprehensive mass transit systems, like a London, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Italy, Spain, Portugal. This is a good example of where even a low, no income tax countries can still have useful, beneficial Governments that step up as a regulator, market maker/shaper. And where a public's powerful few are so stubborn to refuse basic rules even where it can tremendously benefit them, their loved ones, then Governments can still step up by investing in top notch Mass Transit. If more Pakistani elites want to buy a Ford Raptor like murder machine, the very least Government can do is give 15,000+ world class, functional, reliable buses to a city like Karachi instead of Punjab Government like motorbike subsidies (they are at highest risk of being murdered on our roads). Markets in this context, left to itself, is broken and will only worsen in lose-lose ways for everyone, even the owners, users of large murder machine vehicles.

It's National Pedestrian Safety Month. And as we head into October, it's important to remember that safety on the road is a shared responsibility. Did you know that lowering your speed even a little bit can make a huge difference in the event of a collision with a pedestrian? In fact, an increase from 32 mph to 42 mph — just an increase of ten — brings a pedestrian's risk of death up 25%. The next time you're on the road, you might want to think twice about speeding.
