Formula 1 has pushed back it's first 2 races for 2024 in Bahrain and Jeddah due to the Islamic month of Ramadan coinciding with the usual Sunday race day on March 10th.
With so many of our Muslim colleagues beginning fasting in just a couple of weeks, it got me thinking of how we as colleagues can also be more accommodating during this period.
- FLEXIBLE HOURS
Fasting during Ramadan begins and ends at sunrise and sunset, which this year will be around 6-6.30 in the morning until a similar time in the evening.
Offering colleagues flexible start and finish times to allow them to break their fast at home, rather than on public transport or in a car on the way to/from work, can make this a more comfortable experience.
- ADJUST MEETING TIMES
Not eating or drinking anything during the day will obviously have an effect on colleagues' energy and focus levels, especially during the first few days as your body adjusts. Being mindful of this, it is a good idea to hold any important meetings earlier in the day rather than late in the afternoon when energy and focus levels will be more depleted than usual.
- COMPANY EVENTS
If you're holding any company events or socials where food would normally be present, like reward lunches, maybe have a think about the timings or dates of these events so our fasting colleagues can still attend without being surrounded by food and drink. In the first few days when hunger and thirst kick in the hardest this can be especially challenging.
Fasting is of course a personal choice, but by being mindful of the impact it has on our colleagues' workdays we can promote healthy, diverse and inclusive workplaces for all.
