One of the most common questions we receive is, "How do I find a neuroaffirming service provider in mental health?" As Autistic adults, seeking help for our mental health can often be more taxing than it is helpful due to the many additional barriers we face. Yet, with around 50–70% of Autistic people experiencing mental health intersections, the need to have neuro-affirming support has never been greater. So, how do you check if a mental healthcare provider is truly neuroaffirming? See our handy tip sheet and guidelines here: https://bit.ly/NDMHGuide [ID: A purple background featuring the Reframing Autism logo at the bottom left and logo knotwork at the bottom right. Text in white reads, "To see if a mental health practice is neuroaffirming, ask... How do you individualise your approach to your clients’ care? What training or study have you recently done to stay up to date? Will you learn about and leverage my strengths in treatment? Will you provide practical and achievable steps to promote my progress?"] #ActuallyAutistic #ReframingAutism #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs

MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING Children’s mental health services rose by 35% however there was only a 4% increase in the number of children who gained access to treatment. Teenagers are more likely to experience depression than young children. Self-harm is a very common problem among young people. If you're concerned about your child’s mental health, you can speak to their school or GP. The GP may refer your child to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), which provides specialist care from psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses and social workers. It's important to listen to your child, rather than necessarily offering advice. Follow your child’s lead and encourage them to share so that they know you really understand. Speaking less and listening more helps you understand how your child feels, and helps them know you realise what they’re going through. To assess what the public knows about therapy and mental health, and what they really want from treatment, the Psychotherapy Action Network (PsiAN) conducted extensive original research with the general public, both pre-pandemic and post-pandemic. From this innovative and unprecedented effort to “listen” to the public, we learned about the attitudes and expectations people have towards therapy, which benefits matter most, what their misperceptions and biases are, and what they know and don’t know about mental health and therapy. This presentation will share the findings from PsiAN’s qualitative and quantitative research. It will also offer a blueprint for engaging and communicating with the public, so that the public gains greater awareness, understanding and appreciation for therapies of depth, insight, and relationship.
