In the deluge created by, let's say, less thoughtful use of generative AI, one of the simplest and most effective ways to create noteworthy or even noticeable writing is to show up on the page as yourself. This came to me via a post on Jane Friedman's site. She knows more about publishing, and people using generative AI in less thoughtful ways than anyone else I've ever met. In this article, Andrea Guevara points out that great things can happen when we write as "the weirdos, the nerds, the awkward, the amazing-yet-misunderstood" people we are we can take some of the power back and find all the other "weirdos out there." Or that is half of it. Then, move on to what TED Talk's Chris Anderson suggests about showing up with a gift for the audience. You've got the personal, unique perspective, vocabulary, and syntax on the one hand. And the particular thing that you can give to the audience that might be useful on the other hand. When these two are put together, you might create something remarkable. As Seth Godin has said, "The opportunity is to actually create something that people choose to talk about, regardless of what the competition is doing." This doesn't mean throwing out all editing. But it does mean that the generic voice in most textbooks has likely diminished in value—not that I or many students ever loved it. The future I see for creative writers and academics who plan to publish is one more full of work like Eugenia Cheng's "How to Bake Pi" than Dummit and Foote's "Abstract Algebra." Cheng's work is the kind of context-rich learning my colleague Goran Trajkovski and I wrote about in Designing Context-Rich Learning by Extending Reality. Dummit and Foote's text will likely still hold favor with many, and I'm not intending to take it down. It has already been created and published. The point is, that moving forward, a new textbook in that model will have a harder time getting noticed. #FutureOfPublishing #PersonalBrand #GenAI
