Today, three of our colleagues, Martin, Lisa and Matt, are beginning the 3 peaks challenge to raise money for a Sarcoma UK research project, in memory of Martin’s wife, Win, who lost her life to leiomyosarcoma (LMS) in July 2021. Sarcomas are a rare type of cancer that originate in the bones and soft tissues, and can appear anywhere in the body. Sarcoma UK is a bone and soft tissue cancer charity that aims to increase awareness of Sarcoma, as well as funding research projects relating to Sarcoma, with 87 research projects funded and over £6.8 million already having been invested by the charity. The project our colleagues are fundraising for aims to identify new drugs that could improve outcomes for patients with LMS, a particularly rare sarcoma that develops in the smooth muscle cells, and for which there is currently no cure. There are an estimated 61,000 women and men living in the UK right now with secondary (metastatic) breast cancer. It is incurable, but research is a vital part of the development of new treatments to allow people to live well for as long as possible. Since 2018 Make 2nds Count has invested over £635K into secondary (metastatic) breast cancer research that contributes to advancing an increased quantity of life for patients.
