We're celebrating #NationalEngineeringDay! Let's join Paulina Krukurka, Team Leader in Body Structures, as she explains how our teams all work together on the production line to expertly build the body of the LEVC TX. Body Structures is the starting point for every TX in its build journey and is one of the most important and high-tech areas of the manufacturing facility at Ansty. Required to have a positive air pressure to remove any dust from entering into the bonding process, the body structure’s main role is to apply a bonding adhesive to over 400 pieces of structural anodised aluminium which is then hot and cold cured. The end result is a fully formed body structure that provides twice the tensile strength of a welded equivalent and the capability to absorb twice the crash energy of mild steel! Hydraulic slides in die casting are used to form complex geometries, such as undercuts, recesses, and side holes, that can't be achieved with the main die halves alone. These slides move perpendicularly to the main opening direction of the die, allowing for the creation of intricate shapes. During the casting process, the slides move into position, forming part of the mold, and retract once the part solidifies. This allows the part to be ejected without damage. Hydraulic power is used because it provides precise control, high force, and reliable operation necessary for repeated use in industrial settings.
