True, but when head and heart get out of balance it starts unravelling. Too much heart over head can lead to lack of attention to financial sustainability and scrutiny, too much head over heart can lead to weakened impact and lack of inclusion. It’s a test of leadership not just to maintain that equilibrium, but to explain ‘why’ in an engaging and authentic way.

Peter Drucker said that the best leaders are developed in charitable organizations. That's because they can't use compensation to bribe people into being productive and aligning with the goals. THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS OF NON-PROFIT BOARDS One of the great honors that comes with age and experience in the business world is the privilege of serving on leadership boards and advisory panels. At my age and station in life, as a certified fundraising executive in the nonprofit world, I've had such opportunities. I’ve seen alot. Having served on numerous executive boards of nonprofit organizations and leadership teams over the years (Seattle Direct Marketing Association, East Texas Advertising Federation, Delilah's Point Hope Foundation, Mercy Ships, various Christian charities, etc) I've seen both good and bad of executive boards that have been extremely well-run, while others caused the near collapse of the entire organization. And, I noticed that bigger didn't mean better, nor was age or tenure of the leadership team a driving factor. I saw courageous decisions. Timid decisions. Some too slow. Some too hasty. Yet, irrespective of environmental or internal challenges or opportunities, or the personalities impacting them, I observed a profound, irrefutable series of trends, or a short list, if you will, of the Seven Deadly Sins Of Non-Profit Boards.
