I have been involved in LandAid for nearly 10 years. Their mission is something I am passion about. On Thursday 27 June, LandAid brought 100 of their core partners and supporters together to launch #LandAid's plan for 2024-2029. The youth homelessness crisis is getting worse. There are a many reasons for this. Some include: - Economic, legislative, health and infrastructure inequalities;  - Family or relationship break down; - Difficulty in accessing complex mental health support; - Cuts to charities and local authorities; - Lack of social housing; - Increasingly unaffordable private rented sector; and - No UK wide government plan to tackle youth homelessness, and no nation-wide plan for England and Northern Ireland. LandAid has had many successes over the past three years but there is more to do. The plan includes creating long-term change in locations with the greatest need and creating at least £150 million worth of social value. We are a Transitional Homeless Shelter we get the homelessness off the street, put them in temporary shelter, provide services and training, helps them acquire income and eventually permanent housing. We need: Monetary donations, commercial/residential properties, temporary shelters such as apartments/houses (2 bedroom or more), rooming houses, motels, resource info (ex. employment, properties, furnishings to donate, grants), volunteers, college intern students, lawyer, CPA, event planner, advisory board members. People who are good with digital/social media marketing, YouTube, and sales. People who have successful online businesses to help us obtain, start, and run online businesses to put profit into the shelter and provide income for the clients. Donate money ASAP, make an in-kind donation for a tax write-off, give us resource information to help the homeless (such as grants, furnishings {bedroom, kitchen, living room}, employment or housing), support us by networking our information and support/buying tickets for our fundraising events. Autumn is upon us. The darkness of night eats into the precious light of day, while people add layers to combat the cold as temperatures start to chill. Changing seasons, changing landscapes, winter approaching with the inevitable consequence on mood, cold and darkness monopolising the conversation. And while thoughts of warm get-aways and pending festive merriments occupy the minds of the haves, what of the others among us, the have nots, those living with uncertainty over the very basic necessities of everyday life, like a safe environment to call home. The figures from charities and government bodies around those living on the streets or one step away from it are stark. In 2024 there are an estimated 38K households deemed at risk of homelessness, with a further 117K in temporary accommodation. Many people, already struggling with health and complex family life issues, are overwhelmed by the added pressures caused by the impending reality of unsecured housing. For those finding themselves in this traumatic situation, it is only the timely intervention by ‘good Samaritans’ that stave off the inevitable. JustUs, a charity based in Bedford is one such saving grace to those looking for a helping hand navigating the complexity and bureaucracy of local government housing provisions. Operating with only a limited budget and a small team of highly motivated lived experience caseworkers, JustUs have helped hundreds of vulnerable individuals over the past 10 years secure suitable accommodation. We are placing far too many ambulances under the cliff.” - Denis Parsons Burkitt We spent an illuminating week at the National Housing & Homelessness Conference. The resounding sentiment is that it’s time for change and we can be the generation to develop a meaningful, coordinated solution as a sector. 3 quick takeaways: 📍 The sector is coming together for a real movement towards a national homelessness & housing plan. Up to now, organisations have worked hard in their own lanes but without a cohesive strategy it’s been hard to define progress towards our actual overarching goal together- which leads us to… 📍 The fact that homelessness is solvable. This is defined by AAEH as homelessness that is only brief, rare & non-recurring and has been seen globally. There’s regions in Canada, U.S and of course Finland that have achieved this. The greatest inhibitor to solving homelessness is the fact that we haven’t truly understood as a society that it is solvable. 📍From a We Are Mobilise perspective, it was refreshing to get an insight into where we fit in the puzzle. We truly do have unique programs that plug in really well as a complement to the other charities doing great work. We continued on conversations with prospective partners and it was amazing to hear our friends Youth Projects sharing about the success of our collaboration on Mobilise Matched, our very first direct giving program. It’s time Australia: let’s be the generation that refuses to accept #homelessness as a fact of life. #wearemobilise

Crisis has always been there for people in hard times. This past year, their services, expertise and advocacy have been a lifeline for thousands. Their 2022-23 impact report highlights some of the incredible work they're doing. Across Britain, over 9,000 people benefitted from their services. Today is World Homeless Day, a day of remembering and a day for compassion. The United Nations conducted a global study in 2005 and at that time it was estimated that more than 100 million people worldwide were homeless, and at least 1.5 billion people lacked housing that was adequate. And the trend was toward a crisis. We see that today in CA and across the US. The drivers of homelessness are many and the remedies just as many. The first night on the streets will be scary, you won’t sleep much and you will realize how nice you had it sleeping in a climate-controlled environment. Don’t worry thought, it does get better. The first thing you must realize when spending your first night on the streets is that it is temporary. If you don’t look at it as temporary it’s like looking down after being told not to, it’s going to just add to the chaos. The reality is that you have a very small window to get off the streets before you start facing the negative effects of long-term homelessness. The longer you’re homeless the longer you’re going to stay on the streets. I know this may be confusing, so let me give you a stat I’m aware of. If an individual spends 90 days or longer on the streets, it is likely that they will spend as long as 18 to 24 months on the streets. If you’re on the streets longer than 2 years the likelihood that you will get off the streets drops down into the single digits. Being homeless is a lot like being exposed to radiation, the longer you’re exposed the more lethal and irreversible it becomes. Finding a place to sleep isn’t that hard in most places as long as the 9th circuit ruling stays in affect, but if it is overturned you may have to revert to homeless tactics of old. Places to find a spot to sleep are under bridges, on sidewalks, in doorways, on abandoned property or in a wooded area. Right now, it’s pretty much open season to sleep wherever you want within reason and the time constraints. If you’re looking for a place to sleep and you want to be static, scout out the area for a few days before setting up camp. What you will be looking for is the amount of homeless traffic, cops, pedestrians, and visibility of the campsite if you’re in the woods. If you’re in an urban setting, downtown is always the safest bet as long as you’re up before the business opens. If you’re planning on a long-term camp be sure to clean up after yourself if you don’t want your camp blown up by police. Staying safe your first night will be easier than you think. The great thing about homeless, although some think otherwise, is we’re human beings just like you. Within the homeless community there is a wide range of personalities just like within the housed community, so that will make things easier to navigate. If you’re always polite and courteous to those you interact with you will always be safe, but beware there is always the potential for bad actors. So, make sure you’re paying attention to habits and tics to ensure your safety while being homeless.....

My son and I went to Edinburgh. It was part of a memory lane trip. We visited the beautiful coastal place we lived when he was a baby, went past his Dad’s childhood home and took the tram out to a favourite spot for lunch and a card game. We went past where I used to work: ‘I worked there son.’  ‘What as Mum?’ ’At a homeless hostel for girls?’ ’A homeless hostel? For girls? What do you mean?’ Lots of children who can’t live with their Mummys and Daddys go to homeless hostels at 16, 17, 18 son.’ ’What? I don’t understand? Why Mummy?’ It is literal nonsense. It makes no sense. It is part of the system which churns children through multiple homes (‘placements’), ricochets the child and their people (including professionals) against the clinical edges of bureaucracies and sends them to ‘independence’ - a cruel end to a searching for, or a losing of, home and belonging. Comments from those we work alongside include: ’I get angry when my friends complain about their Mum and Dad. They don’t know how lucky they are.’ ‘I had 33 homes. Each one was supposed to be my parent. How do I trust anyone?’ ’Love, belonging and opportunity. That’s what I needed.’ And those who know home and belonging talk of its life-changing power to heal, to create security, to have a place to return to, to know love. A lovely colleague sent this article to me and it made me wonder again about the power of people, helping each other, in their own homes. Whilst this is quite an unorthodox example, it's still people helping others, despite the system. I've long been thinking about the housing crisis that we find ourselves in and about something that isn't been discussed much at all - home sharing and how this might be used to help in some part address the homelessness issue. We simply can't build our way out of this problem. There is so much untapped resource and energy sitting with people in their own homes to help others (and earn some money at the same time), build connection and utilize space capacity in homes.
