Hear how a thriving circular economy can redefine sustainability for Victoria

"We often hesitate to discuss the need to simply buy less, fearing it will stifle economic growth and place the blame and responsibility on the individual rather than the system. However, we know that the shift toward a circular economy can coexist with a thriving economy. Modelling shows that shifting to a circular economy could create an economic opportunity of $23 billion by 2025 for Australia, and tens of thousands of jobs. We know that reuse generates 25 times more jobs than recycling, and 81 times more jobs than landfill on a per tonne basis." A great summary of the opportunities that exist as we transform to a circular economy, if we involve communities and bring them along with us.

Globally, the circular economy is gaining momentum, but the reality is that many areas worldwide are still grappling with the same fundamental challenges: how to minimise waste generation and create an economy where we keep the resources and materials we have in circulation for as long as possible. While recycling is undeniably a crucial element of waste management, it cannot serve as a standalone solution. Fresh from last week's Waste Expo Australia, Sustainability Victoria’s CEO Matt Genever discusses how Victoria can redefine sustainability through a thriving circular economy that prioritises innovative design and community collaboration.

This initiative will include specific strategies and KPIs for our holding ERWO, along with tailored metrics for Südwolle Group and our sister company Hoftex Group AG, ensuring transparency and targeted improvements across all levels of our operations.    💧🔄 Furthermore, we also implement focused environmental initiatives, like water management and energy efficiency, as well as innovations in waste management and circularity, and social and governance dimensions.    🌻 We are currently in the final steps of defining our strategic goals for 2030, which include initiatives in water reduction, carbon footprint reduction, sustainable product development, and innovative recycling concepts. 🌐 European Environment Agency Report - Accelerating the circular economy in Europe 🔍2 weeks ago, the European Environment Agency (EEA) released a report titled "Accelerating the Circular Economy in Europe - State and Outlook 2024”, providing an in-depth analysis of our advancements and obstacles in transitioning to a circular economy. So what can we take away from this report? 🔁The concept of a circular economy has gained widespread acceptance. However, the majority of people link it just to waste management. Yet, the emerging potential of this concept lies in preserving the value of materials and prolonging their life by using actions such as reuse, repair and remanufacturing to achieve longer and better use of products. 📝What emerges from the report is that, while there are positive trends to acknowledge, such as the introduction of new circularity policies at the EU level and increased circular activities across Member States, there's still work to be done. It is indeed true that with a circularity rate of 11.5% in 2022, Europe consumes a higher proportion of recycled materials than other world regions, but its improvement has been limited in recent years. In fact, the likelihood of reaching our waste reduction targets by 2030 remains uncertain, indicating the need for more decisive action. 💪The EEA highlights the transformative potential of the circular economy in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. But its impact goes beyond alleviating environmental pressures; the EU industrial policy strategy advocates for simultaneous ecological and digital transitions, requiring the development of new technologies and potentially creating 700,000 new jobs across the EU by 2030, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises. 💡The report emphasises the importance of prioritising resource reduction and transitioning to a less material-intensive economy. It stresses maximising product utility and prolonging lifetimes, along with utilising secondary raw materials to drive circular economy success.
