Hear how a thriving circular economy can redefine sustainability for Victoria

Globally, the circular economy is gaining momentum, but the reality is that many areas worldwide are still grappling with the same fundamental challenges: how to minimise waste generation and create an economy where we keep the resources and materials we have in circulation for as long as possible. While recycling is undeniably a crucial element of waste management, it cannot serve as a standalone solution. Fresh from last week's Waste Expo Australia, Sustainability Victoria’s CEO Matt Genever discusses how Victoria can redefine sustainability through a thriving circular economy that prioritises innovative design and community collaboration.

"We often hesitate to discuss the need to simply buy less, fearing it will stifle economic growth and place the blame and responsibility on the individual rather than the system. However, we know that the shift toward a circular economy can coexist with a thriving economy. Modelling shows that shifting to a circular economy could create an economic opportunity of $23 billion by 2025 for Australia, and tens of thousands of jobs. We know that reuse generates 25 times more jobs than recycling, and 81 times more jobs than landfill on a per tonne basis." A great summary of the opportunities that exist as we transform to a circular economy, if we involve communities and bring them along with us.

This initiative will include specific strategies and KPIs for our holding ERWO, along with tailored metrics for Südwolle Group and our sister company Hoftex Group AG, ensuring transparency and targeted improvements across all levels of our operations.    💧🔄 Furthermore, we also implement focused environmental initiatives, like water management and energy efficiency, as well as innovations in waste management and circularity, and social and governance dimensions.    🌻 We are currently in the final steps of defining our strategic goals for 2030, which include initiatives in water reduction, carbon footprint reduction, sustainable product development, and innovative recycling concepts. Embracing sustainability in air cargo has shifted from being a choice to a necessity for enduring profitability and trust within the industry. Key strategies like recycling and effective waste management play a crucial role, enabling carriers to lessen their environmental footprint while enhancing their efficiency. Many carriers are taking proactive steps, such as adopting biodegradable and recyclable packaging and partnering with suppliers to create solutions that satisfy operational requirements with minimal environmental impact. As a result, some have achieved remarkable outcomes, like a 20% reduction in packaging waste in 2023. https://okt.to/scnAaI

Sustainability is at the heart of our industry, and it’s a responsibility we take seriously. Proper e-waste recycling, reducing landfill waste, and ensuring that old electronics are reused or recycled in a responsible way is not just good for the planet – it’s also an important way to demonstrate our commitment to environmental stewardship. As Operations Manager, I will be working to further optimize our recycling processes, partner with eco-conscious organizations, and promote sustainable practices both internally and externally. But the work doesn’t end there. We know that achieving zero landfill waste is an ambitious goal – one that requires collaboration and innovation across the entire supply chain. That’s why I’m reaching out to like-minded recyclers, sustainability advocates, and industry partners who are equally passionate about reducing e-waste and closing the loop on electronics recycling.
