Happy Labour Day, New Zealand! Wellington carpenter, Samuel Parnell, is generally credited with being the first person in New Zealand to take a stand for work-life balance by insisting on an 8-hour working day. In 1840 he reportedly told a prospective employer, “There are twenty-four hours per day given us; eight of these should be for work, eight for sleep, and the remaining eight for recreation…”. Parnell encouraged other tradesmen to adopt his approach, unions campaigned for an 8-hour day and the first official “labour demonstration day” was celebrated on 28 October 1890.
Now, as we navigate the modern workforce with flexible hours, remote work, and hybrid models, technology is empowering us to redefine balance. With digital tools and platforms, we can work smarter, not harder, and prioritise our wellbeing. From virtual meetings to flexible schedules, technology is breaking down barriers and enabling us to seamlessly blend work and life. Let's harness this power to create a better balance that works for everyone.
