Sustainability has long been a core pillar of Lexmark’s strategy, and a key architect of that pillar has been John D. Gagel, our chief sustainability officer. With profound sadness we share that John died suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday. John leaves behind a beautiful family, friends far and wide, a global community of colleagues who were fortunate to work with him, and a sterling legacy in an industry where he truly excelled. A 25-year Lexmarker and former science teacher, John brought his educational background to his approach to work. He was incredibly knowledgeable, passionate about sustainability, and driven to make a difference. Yet what many who knew him recall most is that despite his expertise and achievements, he remained humble and humane. Thanks to John and his team, Lexmark’s sustainability program is award-winning, innovative and always going one step further than is required. We are committed to ensuring his legacy lives on in the continuation of his work. In his honor, his family asks that you plant a tree. Of the many things John was, he was also a much respected, influential and highly sought-after thought-leader and spokesperson. Not only in the US, but also in EMEA and worldwide. He was great with the media and analysts – a dream for any Corporate Comms person. He was our CSO we could always rely on, be it for press interviews, analyst briefings, presentations, background briefings with our PR agency or press dinners at launch events. His knowledge of and his passion for CSR combined with his natural authority, authenticity and kindness has left an impression on whoever he spoke to. I am more than grateful to have had the honor to work with John and support his sustainability mission from the PR side, even though it was only for a brief period of time. We could have done so much more together, but Corp Comms will do its part in making sure that John’s legacy lives on.💚 My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
John is the best example of someone who worked and lived with passion and purpose. His enthusiasm was infectious and represented all that is good within Lexmark's culture. My thoughts and prayers are with John's family.
This is really sad! My thoughts and condolences go to his family, his team mates and all those who will miss him.
This is heartbreaking John was a great colleague, my deepest condolences to his family. RIP 🙏🙏
Thank you all for the kind words about my father. The support shown from Lexmark and all those he worked with has been greatly appreciated by the entire family. It has been so amazing to know he was truly making a difference within the sustainability industry. We look forward to seeing Lexmark carry on his legacy.
I am so grateful for the way John welcomed me into the Lexmark family, and on one memorable event at his home. One of the nicest blokes I've ever met. Condolences to the Gagel family and to all John's workmates, friends, and his broader network. RIP buddy.
A tremendous loss for so many. John was an inspirational person and passionate about sustainability. I fondly remember the impact he made on many customers through his knowledge and passion. Having John interact with our customers always led to inspiring and stimulating discussions. He has left his mark on our company and so many people, he will be missed.
My prayers and condolences to John’s family. He loved you dearly and spoke of you often. John was a genuine man who led by example. He will be missed by all who knew him, and his loss will be tangible at Lexmark. Thank you John for your teamwork and for teaching me how to use a dibble bar to plant tree saplings. I’ll use one now to plant a tree in your honor.
John was one of the nicest human beings I have worked with. Thoughts and prayers for the family and all those who knew John.
