Briefly looked at the presidential election manifestos of a few leading candidates to see the emphasis on gender equality and women's empowerment (just drawing from key areas and key activities proposed). Interesting to note the language used in some manifestos, particularly how the term 'gender' and ‘LGBTIQA+’ is not mentioned at all and zero emphasis on men engaged programmes to promote gender equality or either issues central to men. Warning: a long thread. #PresidentialElection #LKA #GenderEquality https://lnkd.in/grDXJnHY

A really interesting little explainer from the European Institute of Gender Equality on formal vs substantive equality. There’s growing scepticism that formal equality measures where men and women are treated the same may not advance gender equality at all. “The scrutiny of gender-neutral formal laws, policies and programmes that treat women and men alike becomes necessary to evaluate whether they will accelerate the achievement of gender equality in practice and eliminate discrimination against women”. #genderequality #substantivegenderequality
