"Why I Chose Mechanical Engineering" From a young age, I’ve always had a passion for design and i was always curious about how things worked I would take apart toys, gadgets anything I could hands on just to see what made them tick . Initially drawn to fields like architecture and interior design, I found myself captivated by how creativity and engineering come together to shape the world around us. While these fields offered a chance to work with form and space, I realized that Mechanical Engineering had something more to offer versatility and the ability to design systems that drive innovation across many industries. Mechanical Engineering, for me, became the perfect blend of creativity and technical rigor. It allowed me to not only design but also understand the mechanics behind what makes machines, tools, and structures function. This field pushes me to think beyond just aesthetics it's about solving real-world problems with engineering precision. I would say it's a whole some it covers structural engineering, electrical engineering and computer science engineering. So if you want to be an all rounder Mechanical engineering is a perfect fit. As mechanical engineers, core design principles empower us to create innovative and successful, sustainable products and by mastering the below fundamentals, we’re laying the groundwork for exceptional mechanical engineering designs and practices. Here are a few key principles to keep in mind: · Form Follows Function: prioritize the product’s intended purpose when communicating design choices. To ensure optimal functionality, open communication should take place between the mechanical engineer and client to ensure the best result. · Material Matters: When selecting the right material for the job, factors like strength, weight, cost and environmental impact should always be considered · Safety First: User safety is paramount, so to ensure the product meets all the safety and regulatory requirements, integration of safety features from the design stage should be considered. · Simplicity is Key: Prioritize elegant and efficient solutions. "𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀." At least, that’s what I used to believe. Since my junior year as a mechanical engineering student, I’ve been passionate about mechanical design. What do I love about it? The power in developing the inherent nature of something. For me, the real beauty lies in transforming a concept from a pen and calculator to something that promotes sustainability, human convenience, and security. For a long time, I believed my designs had to be 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵 – in the sense that they should be the very exact solutions. I thought they needed to account for every scenario, every imperfection, every deviation, and be backed by meticulous, often redundant, calculations. This mindset led me down a path of overdesigning—spending hours generating complex meshes, modeling and simulating irrelevant details. But what did it cost? 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀, and 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 that could have been used more effectively to 𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘻𝘦 rather than perfect. Through my journey—from personal projects to freelancing, to now being a full-time mechanical design engineer—I’ve learned that the key to good engineering isn’t perfection, but 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺. Here’s what I’ve found most valuable: • 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆: Understand project constraints to avoid overdesigning. • 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀: Resources like ASME, ISO, and SAE exist for a reason—don’t reinvent the wheel. • 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀: Smaller, independent steps reduce resource intensity. • 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗗𝗙𝗠): A design only matters if it can be manufactured. • 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀: Factor in human error and ensure quality without overcomplicating the process. Ultimately, there’s no one-size-fits-all in design. The best solutions optimize time, cost, and performance while meeting project needs. It’s all about finding that balance. 🔧 Confessions of a Mechanical Engineer 🔧 Ever wonder what it's like to be a mechanical engineer? Let me take you behind the scenes: 1. Coffee is a Must: My morning ritual involves more caffeine than the steam engines I design. ☕🚂 2. Sketches and Blueprints: I can turn a napkin sketch into a full engineering plan. Not sure if that’s impressive or just a sign of too many late nights. 📝💭 3. Prototype Problems: If a prototype doesn’t fail at least once, are you even engineering? My designs are like my pets—they need a lot of attention and occasional fixing. 🛠️🐾 4. Tool Obsession: I have more tools than I have social interactions. If you need a wrench or a screwdriver, I’m your go-to person (but don’t ask me to fix your Wi-Fi). 🔧🛠️ 5. CAD and Coffee Breaks: My idea of a vacation is upgrading my CAD software. Beach? Nah, give me a new tool kit! 🌴💻 6. Engineering Humor: Why did the engineer break up with the calculator?
