"Help! My volunteer is challenging my decision. What should I do?" If a volunteer you're managing challenges a decision you or your team has made, here's the first thing you should do: celebrate! Yes, really. Celebrate. When a volunteer pushes back on a decision, it shows they're invested in the work you and the organisation are doing. It demonstrates their sense of ownership. Think about it, they care deeply about the cause, the project, the organisation's goals — so much that they're willing to risk social discomfort to share how they feel. Sure, sometimes it might not be communicated in the most constructive way. Other times, they may not have appreciated all the complexities that constrained the decision-making process. But you can follow up on those things in your regular one-to-one meetings. However, in the moment, celebrate and use it as an opportunity to recognise their contributions: "Thanks for sharing your concerns—that can't have been easy. I can see you really care about this. Here's what I'm going to do…" So, the next time a volunteer challenges a decision, take a moment to celebrate their engagement. They're challenging because they’re invested. They're challenging because they care. #VolunteerManagement #Volunteers

Just a reminder, April is filled with a lot of celebrations and National days/weeks. Two of my favorites are National Volunteer Month and National Volunteer Appreciation Week. This is the time for us individually to get involved (if we aren't already) in something that positively impacts our communities at large. This is also the highlighted time for organizations to honor and celebrate the hard work and dedication of their volunteers. May your organization have 5 volunteers or thousands serving your mission and clients daily, recognition of their commitment to serve also helps in retaining them. So remember to spend extra time this month to acknowledge your volunteers. They are more than just a number in your reports. They are people who chose to make a difference through your organization. And whether they are with you for one day, one month, one season, one year, or more... they deserve recognition. Many of our programs, organizations, institutions, and the like would truly be nothing without our volunteers. Remember those 3 R's of Volunteer Management: Recruitment, Retention, Recognition (and Relationships)! #thankavolunteer #nationalvolunteermonth #volunteers #volunteermanagement #recognition #retention

💡 It's National Volunteer Week in the US - how are you giving back? 🔦 Growing up in a small town, volunteering was how a lot got done. Whether school, community, or other, Some one or cause always needed an extra pair of 🙌. I realized later how important these experiences were. They were always about more than setting up or cleaning up after the event. They provided opportunities to learn and practice new skills: - leadership - negotiation - client service - project planning - financial management - facilitation - ... ... to name a few. Volunteering also provides a window into an organization or industry you want to learn more about. And most organizations are willing to tailor the opportunity to meet your availability - some help is always better than none! During this volunteer week, consider where you can lend a hand. It may be a one-time event - or evolve into a longer-term role. I am helping plan a school open house this weekend, one of the last big events of the year and a milestone for me as I wrap up a 4-year tenure volunteering with my kids' school. I am passing the baton to parents with younger children, and taking a moment to determine where my interest and energy will take me next. It just may be supporting women's leadership events with my alma mater, like in this photo from a couple years ago. Where will this volunteer week find you? #volunteer #powerlane #management I’m Heather L. Powers. Follow me for insights on working moms and the leaders who need them.

NEW #TuesdayTips! It's award season with #VolunteerAppreciation events in April, or any time of year. If only a few volunteers are doing outstanding work (that is consistently recognized), why is that? Are there engagement issues, bias, or favoritism at play like a "Mean Girls" high school clique? How can everyone be awarded for their work so volunteers don't lose motivation, engagement, and connection (see my "3C’s of Happy Volunteers: Comfort, Convenience, Connection")? Don’t assume that everyone wants to be appreciated, celebrated, or recognized in the same way. Not everyone wants a party or prizes. Just asking one question before planning a Volunteer Appreciation event can make a big impact; how all volunteers like to be recognized, appreciated, valued in their own terms? You'll probably get some surprising answers. Sound off in the comments on your party plans for celebrating volunteers!

Proud moments 😊 There are a couple of things I am proud of over the past month: 1) The linking up with Father Hudson's Care and the different projects within that, including Young at Heart, Tabor and St Chad's Sanctuary. Where we have delivered awareness raising sessions to staff, volunteers and service users. Last Friday saw me deliver to approximately 40 participants in person, I was asked if I wanted the microphone, and to those who know me, there will be no surprise that it wasn't needed 🤣 There was so much participation and I just genuinely enjoyed it. If you would have told me three years ago that I would be enjoying public speaking, I would be laughing. 2) Recruiting Volunteers As a Volunteer Coordinator, sometimes there is a lot of background work, writing role descriptions, listing them in various places, lots of email contact and liaising with people. However when you have volunteers start with your organisation, you see that it is starting to pay off. When you hear of the fabulous work that they are doing, the volunteers at the start of their journey meeting other volunteers and getting along and the ideas that they are putting into fruition, that the service users are enjoying, it makes it so worthwhile and more. Heading into my long weekend feeling reflective, practicing gratitude and happy that some things are paying off. What things are you proud of this month? #VolunteerCoordinator #Volunteering #Presentations #Awareness #Partnerships #Collaboration

"Help, my volunteer is leaving, what should I do?" If your volunteer tells you they're leaving their role, here's the first thing you should do: Say, "thank you". Here’s why. When a volunteer wants to end their role, it's easy to get caught up in all the ways it might affect us and our work. Now, I'm not dismissing those concerns. However, if we let them become the focus, we lose sight of the person most affected by this decision: the volunteer. Volunteering connects with people's core beliefs and personal values - the things that drive them to get out of bed in the morning. So leaving a volunteering role is never an easy decision to make. By the time they're telling you, they've likely been thinking (perhaps even worrying) about this conversation for some time. If your volunteer is stepping back from the role due to a change of circumstances, they might even feel as though they don't have much choice in the matter. In taking some time to show gratitude, you can help put the volunteer at ease, letting them know that you hear and appreciate them. You might say something like, "Thank you for bringing this up. I appreciate that this can't have been an easy decision, but I am so grateful that you've told me." Maybe ask them to say a bit more, and hold the space to listen and empathise with them. From there, you can have the practical discussions that will help you and your team plan for the future. But by beginning with appreciation for their honesty and openness, you signal to the volunteer that your concern is where it matters most - with them. #Volunteering #VolunteerManagement #Gratitude

Had a great first day at the AVM conference. It was inspiring to hear from other volunteer specialists what they are doing and learning from each other. The Volunteer Voices session was a highlight, hearing from volunteers who provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities they were facing. One question was If they had a magic wand what they would change. The key takeaways from them included the need for streamlined onboarding, breaking down of barriers, staff who support volunteers should be a full-time role and valuing volunteers time in quality over quantity data. We need to facing these challenges and find a solution. Good to listen to volunteers, we should be doing more of this. #AVM #Volunteers
