The 2024 EY Open Science Data Challenge is officially launched and the topic is Coastal Resilience! Growing up on an island in the Caribbean, coastlines are part of my identity. --- • I remember "pulling seine" on Mayaro beach, the sun rising against the backdrop of thousands of flapping fish, as people from all across the village came down to the shore.   • I remember the glass-bottom boat rides to go snorkelling at Buccoo Reef and swimming in the Nylon Pool, hoping to avoid the brush of a stingray gliding past.   • I remember taking our inter-island ferry, sailing past spectacular views of the Port of Spain skyline amid the clanking sound of towering cranes offloading mutli-coloured containers.   • I remember travelling to Matura and holding a baby turtle, smaller than the palm of my hand and learning about how a rural community mobilised to protect one of the world's most important nesting sites for the endangered leatherback turtle. • I remember the stillness of the Caroni Swamp, our largest mangrove wetland and sitting patiently at sunset awaiting the breath-taking view of thousands of Scarlet Ibis, our national bird, returning home.   • I remember how vital coastlines are to our economy, transportation, tourism, food, livelihoods and our very identity. --- 75% of the world’s population lives within 50km of the ocean. Coastal zones host critical ecosystems, infrastructure and economic assets.
