The 2024 EY Open Science Data Challenge is officially launched and the topic is Coastal Resilience! Growing up on an island in the Caribbean, coastlines are part of my identity. --- • I remember "pulling seine" on Mayaro beach, the sun rising against the backdrop of thousands of flapping fish, as people from all across the village came down to the shore. • I remember the glass-bottom boat rides to go snorkelling at Buccoo Reef and swimming in the Nylon Pool, hoping to avoid the brush of a stingray gliding past. • I remember taking our inter-island ferry, sailing past spectacular views of the Port of Spain skyline amid the clanking sound of towering cranes offloading mutli-coloured containers. • I remember travelling to Matura and holding a baby turtle, smaller than the palm of my hand and learning about how a rural community mobilised to protect one of the world's most important nesting sites for the endangered leatherback turtle. • I remember the stillness of the Caroni Swamp, our largest mangrove wetland and sitting patiently at sunset awaiting the breath-taking view of thousands of Scarlet Ibis, our national bird, returning home. • I remember how vital coastlines are to our economy, transportation, tourism, food, livelihoods and our very identity. --- 75% of the world’s population lives within 50km of the ocean. Coastal zones host critical ecosystems, infrastructure and economic assets. So, it’s of growing concern that these stretches of land are increasingly vulnerable to the dramatic effects of climate change. Liam Rezende made me nostalgic this morning about my childhood in Trinidad 🇹🇹. As a Data scientist & Oceanographer, I am super excited to see the outcomes of this project. It’s an amazing, meaningful application for data science.
You paint a beautiful picture with words Liam! Proud to work for EY where we’re so focused on contributing to solving such critical climate change problems. Hope to catch up with you soon!
