"Look aunty! A real fire engine truck!!!" This weekend, my team organized a trip to the fire station for a bunch of 6-year olds! It is one of the activities in our year-long collaboration with the volunteer organization that Operations have adopted. ** We were supposed to be the children’s minders, but it didn’t take very long before the firefighters brought out the 6-year olds in all of us. The incessant “oh”, “wow”, while savoring the touch of a real fire engine truck is almost a dream come true for many of us who grew up with the Lego-modeled ones. Seizing the opportunity, I chatted with the firefighters who are normally too busy to pay me any attention. It goes like this: What keeps you going in a job like this? Purpose, passion, pride. How do you make it from bed to truck in under one minute at the sound of the alarm? Practice, practice, practice. Repeat. How do you remain in top form like to be able to climb 12-storeys non-stop in 3 minutes with 20kg on your back? We train, we train, and we train. We never stop training. Do you ever feel like quitting? Yes, there were moments… then we remind ourselves why we signed up for this in the first place. How do you know you are getting better at what you do? We know with certainty as there is no lack of resources to help us get better - new equipment, new technology, new practices – how can we not get better unless we refuse to? And lastly: are you afraid? Of course we are. Who can be not afraid, staring danger in its face, engulfed by it? But we have a mission to accomplish, and we know our team is protecting one another and our buddies are watching out for us. We know as a team, we got this. Amidst a backdrop of blaring sirens, I left the station with a newfound respect for our firefighters and emergency rescuers. Such a noble calling. Didn’t they say not all heroes wear capes? ** (The children come from lower income families, and one of the programme’s objectives is to ensure that these children, in their developmental years, no matter what their circumstances are, have access to opportunities for social-emotional learning and educational support so that they can succeed in life.)

📣Family Rights Group campaigns for recognition and better support for kinship carers and the children they are raising. 👨👩👧👦Relatives and friends stepping in to raise children in times of crisis do so out of love. This is massive. After our move, we went from a breakfast/snack/lunch/snack school to just a morning/afternoon snack school. Both phenomenal (and fee paying) schools, but the difference is immense. I am incredibly grateful to be in a position to have sent my daughter to the schools I have, and am by no means comparing my experience to the struggles others face, but even just this small change amounts to so much work. For those that think it’s just “throwing food in a box”: First it is ensuring you have said food to throw in a box. Nutritious breakfast foods don’t travel well and/or are disproportionately messy to eat at school when dealing with 1-5 year olds. Lunches? “Just use dinner food.” Okay sure, let me figure out additional quantities to meals to ensure there are left overs that Little would be willing to eat, and eat cold. Skipped a shop, because you figured you’d go next day when Little is at school, only to realize you now don’t have a lunch option? It is a MASSIVE change even to those not facing food instability. Have y’all ever been Hangry? Or had a hangry co-worker you’ve thrown a candy bar at to get them out of the rut and be productive? Now imagine that feeling as a kid supposed to sit and patiently learn all while dealing with all the other concerns and struggles hormones provide. I’m sure sure there will be naysayers and those bemoaning “hand outs” etc., but the joy this seemingly simple change has brought me on behalf of children and adults I’ve never met and will likely never meet, helps me believe that my hope for humanity is still alive! Thanks as ever to Sami Unrau for uplifting and positive content! #freemeals #freebreakfast #freelunch #workingparents

Our school district announced that starting next year, all students will be able to receive a free breakfast and lunch every day at school. I’m celebrating for all those kids who will now have no-questions-asked access to two meals a day. And I am celebrating for all the families for whom this will be a lift of multiple varieties of burdens. Whether it’s the burden of affording the food, or planning for and providing it daily for kids before and as they head out the door, this benefits all families, working parents and otherwise. When we support kids, we support working families. It takes a village.

Some of us are blessed to wake up on Christmas morning with a room full of love, laughter, and family. The call of our children early in the morning, their voices full of energy and excitement. For me, it’s my very most favorite holiday for those very same reasons. I love traditions and more than anything I love my children and seeing their smiles on Christmas morning. Not everyone has this privilege. Think about children who have been recently removed from their homes, feeling uncertainty, feeling lost and a terrible feeling of grief, not knowing what has happened, not understanding why they are suddenly in a strangers home. Not understanding why “Mom” is not there, wondering where their brother or sister went, why are they not together? Confused about how nice the people are in this new home, but sad because it’s not their home, it’s not their bed, they don’t have their favorite comforting blanket and plush toy. The smell is different, the food looks different, it’s not what “Mom” cooks. Just imagine… This is the feeling of the hundreds of children placed in Foster Care and Residential homes everyday. Its not much compared to all that they have lost, but together we can help share a little joy during the most magical time of the year. Together we can make wishes come true and hope that in someway we have touch the life of a child when they need it most, together we can make a difference! Let’s spread joy together! When participating in Secret Santa you are helping a child in need, who like other children, have wishes and “maybe” a little hope. Interested? Email SecretSanta@HelixHumanServices.org with your interest. We will do our best to match your preferred age and gender. You can help by requesting one wish list and purchasing items on the list. Each wish list is written by each child/youth. I have to say - full disclosure- its fun to see how creative children can get, but sad to see wishes you can fulfill, like “I wish I could see my dad” or “I want to be with my sister”. Other ways to help is making a monetary donation (we do the shopping for you), hosting a toy drive or giving tree, or purchasing an item (or a few) from the Secret Santa Amazon Wish List. Have any questions? Lets chat! To learn more about Helix Human Services and the children and families we serve: www.HelixHumanServices.org To make a monetary donation or learn more about Secret Santa visit: https://lnkd.in/e5MEGNST To see the Amazon Wish List visit (remember as wish lists come in the list of items increases): Link coming soon. Thank you for helping make wishes come true!
