Customs surrounding the birth are less strictly adhered to today than in the past, but they still include events such as the announcement of the birth, the three-day-old ceremony, the one-month-old ceremony, the hundredth day ceremony, the naming ceremony and the first birthday ceremony. Announcing the Birth Once a baby is born, the first thing to do is announcing the birth of the baby, i.e. the baby's father announces the good news to his parents-in-law, friends and neighbors. According to tradition, when the baby's father pays a visit to people's homes to announce the good news, he usually gives them “happiness eggs”---boiled eggs dyed red, “red eggs” as they are called in some areas. The eggs are usually 99 in number, and sometimes fewer than that, but the last digit of the number must be a nine. In some areas, the presents may include some other things besides eggs---cakes and sweets, cooked dishes, chickens and so on.
