Hello friends - here’s a podcast from UNSW Engineering on Engineering The Future of Solar, a conversation with Zi Ouyang , UNSW SPREE graduate and now CTO OF JA Solar, Neil Martin and myself. It’s aimed at a general audience and we’re looking to explain and inspire. And to share a little of our optimism because - from where we’re sitting- we can see that our future is looking bright, powered principally by solar. We need to be installing ten times as much solar every year compared with the current 5GW a year. Yes! we’re looking at installing 50GW a year of solar every year as we electrify transport and process heat. This will create amazing jobs and opportunities for the engineers of the future. The technology of today works and produces the lowest cost of new energy generation. And the costs will continue to come down as we improve the technology and install more. Solar plus other renewable generation sources and a variety of storage technologies are already providing 40% of Australia’s electricity needs. We’re targeting over 80% by 2030 and more than 100% by 2050 -powering a future exporting clean energy through cables, hydrogen products and green minerals. Generation technologies will improve. Engineering challenges in integration will be solved with power electronics. Education and better communication will bring communities along in the energy transition. Join us on this journey. Enjoy Engineering the Future of Solar! https://lnkd.in/gpBi6rFc
