I was very pleased to give evidence a the Business and Trade Committee this mornining. The Committee’s focus on how to improve the attractiveness of the U.K. for manufacturers is welcome. For a long time the U.K. was not competitive with other countries. We are now starting to see a turning point. The government’s advanced manufacturing strategy is doing a lot of the right things: a new captial grants facility; full expensing of capital and an improved focus on skills. But any manufacturing strategy sits in a wider business context, and in life sciences this means we need a thriving domestic commercial environment; a level playing field with international competitors on everything from fiscal conditions to regulation and an effective ‘concierge service’ to help potential investors navigate all aspects of national and local government, smoothing the way to convert potential into reality. Whoever wins the next election, all sectors need stability, predictability and real commitment from government to compete with the rest of the world. If we can achieve that there’s no reason why the U.K. can’t thrive.
This morning ABPI Chief Executive Richard Torbett gave evidence at the Business and Trade Committee on industrial policy where he discussed the Life Sciences vision and the opportunities for the life sciences industry. Listen below ⬇️
