The correct answer was *magnetic shape memory alloy*: • Magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMAs) are typically made from Nickel, Manganese, and Gallium (Ni-Mn-Ga). • In response to a magnetic field, these materials can produce a 10-12% deformation. • MSMAs can also be activated thermally like traditional shape memory alloys. When heated, they undergo a phase transformation from martensite to austenite. • These smarty-pants alloys can “remember” their original shape, making them useful in various applications, from medical devices to robotics. Beam shaping of extreme high-peak power femtosecond lasers has been achieved by PowerPhotonic. This puts PowerPhotonic at the forefront of the high-energy laser industry with freeform, wafer-scale optics designed for use with some of the world’s highest, peak power, femtosecond lasers. Femtosecond optics are used in next-generation, ultra-short pulse (USP), high-peak-power, laser applications. To optimize these applications, beam shaping optics must have slowly varying, refractive, freeform surfaces; as USP beams can have issues with diffractive surfaces containing sharp features. The beam shaping optics must also be made from thin wafers of the purist grades of fused silica and optimised coatings – with independent tests showing results close to the intrinsic LIDT of the purist fused silica. “Cold” laser material processing, laser-induced inertial fusion and laser-directed energy systems all benefit.
