This past Saturday, we came together with families, students, and community members for CYL’s 2024 Family Volunteer Day—and what an incredible day it was! At Montbello Central Park, we joined forces with Denver Parks & Recreation to clean, beautify, and care for a space that brings people together. Together, we: - Gathered eight full trash bags, revitalizing the park. - Cleared 100 feet of invasive vines from fences around the baseball field—a project DPR has been hoping to tackle for years. - Made the park a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming space for everyone in the community. But the impact didn’t stop there. Family Volunteer Day wasn’t just about the tasks we completed but about the connections we built. Students from multiple schools and neighborhoods came together, forming new friendships, learning from one another, and discovering what’s possible when we work as a team. We also dove into an important leadership lesson, exploring the difference between prescribing solutions and truly listening to community needs. The result? It was a collaborative day of service that was as much about growth and learning as it was about impact. At CYL, we’re all about empowering young leaders to take action, foster connections, and make a meaningful difference in their communities. Family Volunteer Day reminded us that when we work together, we can create spaces—not just physical but emotional and social—that invite belonging, joy, and togetherness. This week, my colleague and I had the privilege of visiting Harberton North Special School—a truly emotive experience that has left a lasting impact on me. As we work to develop the LifeLit programme, gaining a deep understanding of the additional support needed isn’t just important—it’s essential. This visit wasn’t just about observing; it was about listening. We had the opportunity to meet incredible pupils and dedicated educators, each sharing their unique perspectives on what support looks like and where it can be improved. It’s not enough to create a programme in isolation—we need to refine, tweak, and adapt it to meet the real needs of those we’re aiming to serve. Accessibility and impact are at the heart of what we’re building at LifeLit. By engaging directly with pupils and educators, we ensure we’re not just providing a service—we’re delivering true solutions that make a meaningful difference in schools and lives. To the staff and students at Harberton North, thank you for welcoming us so warmly. 🌿 Investing in Nature-Based Play and Learning in Tucson 🌿 At PNC, we’re thrilled to collaborate with incredible partners in Tucson to foster high-quality, nature-based outdoor play and learning environments for young children. Together, we’re creating spaces where children can explore, discover, and thrive in harmony with the natural world. ✨ What we’re building together: * Interactive play areas featuring natural surroundings and sensory elements. * Professional development for teachers to implement nature-based curricula. * Family engagement opportunities to deepen connections between home, school, and nature. A huge thank you to the UA School Garden Workshop for leading these enhancements, providing technical support, and sharing their expertise on how gardens can thrive in the desert. We’re also grateful for the partnership of the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD1.org) and the Brichta Infant & Early Learning Center, whose collaboration makes this impactful work possible. And there’s more to come! Future enhancements include a farm stand, where children can sharpen their math skills by selling produce, and—yes—a chicken coop to bring learning to life. 🐓🥬 These efforts are backed by research. Recent PNC-funded studies by the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) revealed: 📊 Nearly 49% of children ages 3-5 play outside less than once a day. 📚 A literature review highlights that nature-based pre-K programs promote better learning and development outcomes for children. By combining research-driven practices with local expertise, we’re cultivating a brighter future where children connect with nature and grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Attending the Creative Convergence Workshop was a reminder of what’s possible when we embrace creativity and community. We explored how the arts can: ► Bring communities together ► Spark authentic connections ► Shape a positive, forward-thinking future For Pulaski County Tribe, it’s about more than projects. It’s about building relationships that matter, fostering creativity that inspires, and creating spaces that bring us together. When head, hands, and heart align, truly transformative things can happen in arts, in leadership, in business, and in community. This workshop reinforced the principles that guide our work: ► Who Not How We achieve more by leaning on the unique strengths and creativity of others. It’s about finding the right people to make the difference. ► Collaboration is Key When we come together, our impact multiplies. Creativity thrives in connection, and our collective efforts go much farther than individual ones. ► Together We Rise By lifting each other up, we create a foundation for resilience and growth. This experience strengthened my belief in creative collaboration as a force for growth and connection. The arts are a catalyst, but the vision extends further. It's about what happens when people choose to be inspired and take action. Through Pulaski County Tribe I'm excited to keep partnering with our community to spark meaningful projects, build local pride, and shape a future where creativity leads the way. Whether it’s through art, business, or the connections we cultivate daily, we all have a role to play in shaping our future. Meet our staff: Cody Pritchard Role: Learning Communities Manager Hobbies: Time with my family, church activities, and spending time outdoors What do you do? I oversee the four learning communities, which includes working with the student leadership, community activities, faculty co-directors, and student organizations and interest groups. I also co-direct the Carver Rural Iowa Scholars Program (CRISP) and help manage the Community Health Outreach electives. Tip for succeeding in med school? Academics is only one part of the student experience. Find ways to focus on your holistic well-being. There are so many opportunities to find community, build relationships, and connect with people that truly care about your success.

Feast of St. John Bosco✨ St. John Bosco, lovingly called Don Bosco, wasn’t just a priest - he was a visionary educator, social reformer, and a champion of the underprivileged. What makes Don Bosco's legacy timeless? 1. Empowering Through Education: At a time when many saw education as a privilege, Don Bosco saw it as a right. He created schools and vocational training centers to uplift marginalized youth. 2. Innovative Teaching: He pioneered the Preventive System, a method rooted in reason, religion, and kindness - focusing on guiding rather than punishing. 3. Unwavering Faith in Youth: Don Bosco believed every young person has potential. He inspired them to dream big and equipped them with the tools to achieve it. 4. A Heart of Service: His work wasn’t confined to classrooms. He tirelessly advocated for the dignity of workers, the homeless, and the forgotten. To this day, the Salesian mission carries his torch, empowering millions of young minds across the globe. Don Bosco’s life is a reminder that true leadership lies in service, and the greatest impact comes from investing in the future - our youth.
