The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is still the only investigative agency in the country (to my knowledge) that investigates your business and then charges you for their time in doing so. Once more, the hourly rates associated with the fee recovery scheme, known as Fee for Intervention (FFI) has steadily increased year on year. It was a pleasure speaking with Food Manufacture and Construction News on this topic and what businesses can do to prevent being landed with an FFI bill on top of the pressures of being under investigation. https://lnkd.in/ecFgnpJ2 https://lnkd.in/eijmBgCc

A food manufacturer has been fined over £500k after three of its employees suffered serious injuries in separate incidents involving machinery. After the hearing, HSE Inspector Jennifer French said: “This company failed to keep employees safe from risks posed by food manufacturing machinery. The training was inadequate and the monitoring insufficient to rectify issues. “It is important for industries to understand the potential dangers arising from the use of, or working near, dangerous machinery." https://lnkd.in/e5wbNKUU

Both HSE inspections and audits are vital for workplace safety, but approached differently: HSE Inspection - Focus: Identifies hazards in the workplace. - Conducted by: The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) or appointed health and safety representatives. - Goal: Enforce health and safety legislation and ensure a safe work environment. - Process: Inspectors will physically examine the workplace, reviewing equipment, procedures, and employee adherence to safety protocols. - Outcome: If hazards or non-compliance are found, the inspector may issue enforcement notices requiring corrective actions. HSE Audit - Focus: Evaluates the effectiveness of your health and safety management system. - Conducted by: Internal personnel or external consultants. - Goal: Improve your overall health and safety program and identify areas for improvement. - Process: Auditors will review your health and safety policies, procedures, risk assessments, training records, and accident reports. - Outcome: Recommendations for strengthening your health and safety program and addressing any gaps in compliance. Analogy: Think of an inspection as a fire marshall's visit to a restaurant. They check for things like working fire extinguishers and proper food storage, while an audit is like the restaurant's own self-assessment of their food safety procedures and hygiene practices. #safetyexpert
