🏛️ Preserving Heritage: UADAMAGE and Martin Duplantier Architectes The UADamage team continues its collaboration with Martin DUPLANTIER 🇺🇦🇪🇺 on a project aimed at preserving architectural landmarks. UADamage specialists are mapping architectural landmarks in certain cities of Ukraine that have been destroyed or damaged due to military actions. The goal is to create a unified database of such landmarks to ensure their preservation. In the future, we plan to compile a report on architectural landmarks. Meanwhile, Martin Duplantier Architectes plans to engage engineers to create 3D models of these architectural landmarks, including interiors and exteriors. This will enable users to navigate our map, explore detailed descriptions of landmarks, their damage or destruction, and precise geolocation of architectural structures. It's worth noting that detailed maps of four cities in Ukraine have already been provided to Martin Duplantier Architectes. "Creswell Revisited: Photos and Sketches of Aleppo City" Exhibition will add new photos of the same buildings, more description, the history of specific buildings depicted, along with exact locations. The original photos were taken by Creswell and the contemporary photos by Dr Zin Alabadin. The exhibition will not only include old and modern photos, but also a group of students from the Faculty of Architecture at Yildiz University have prepared architectural drawings of both sets of photos. The V&A’s Creswell collection of photos of Syria, and especially Aleppo, complement Dr. Zin Alabadin’s photos of the same views taken 100 years later. This exhibition aims to evaluate through comparison the destruction of cultural heritage. The importance lies in the introductory record for each building, featuring historical information, before and after photo documentation of the destruction and sketches. Finally, the extent of damage to the various buildings will be documented which in turn will assist in rebuilding the city later. One of the most important reasons for the selection of Aleppo city is to contribute to the limited number of resources for its study and to introduce the issue of its reconstruction after the war, topics which are not sufficiently covered in current academic studies. #YTÜ

🎊 MIT MAD's Roi Salgueiro Barrio alongside architect Manuel Bouzas Barcala have been selected as curators of the Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2025! Salgueiro Barrio and Bouzas presented their project, Internalities, which was selected by a jury of architects out of 19 proposals. Internalities will explore sustainable architectural practices by focusing on processes that minimize externalities and environmental waste. With an emphasis on materials, labor, energy, byproducts, and local resources, the exhibition will offer a forward-looking approach to architecture that responds to current and future challenges. The Venice Biennale is an international cultural exhibition centering art, architecture, cinema, dance, and theater hosted in Venice, Italy since 1895. The Spanish Pavilion is among 30 permanent pavilions in the Giardini della Biennale in Venice, and displays culturally significant works by Spanish artists and architects during the Biennale. Salgueiro Barrio is the founder of design practice RSAU, a lecturer at MIT Department of Architecture and the curator-director of the MIT Morningside Academy for Design (MAD). Knowledge about how we build has always been treated with reverence. But architects of the ancient world weren't like the architects we know today. They were design specialists but often, also master sculptors, engineers, marine or military engineers or designers of public festivals. In Renaissance Italy, we start to see a shift in the background of architects, from the majority starting their careers in the building crafts, to the majority emerging from the middle and upper classes with more formal liberal arts educations. The design was no longer decided during the process of building as the emphasis shifted to the completion of the full design before construction started. By the end of the 16th century, we no longer see the architect perched on the scaffolding with chisel in hand. Instead, the profession is centred around the architectural office. BERLIN ICC BECOMES THE NEW CENTRE POMPIDOU? Exciting news for Berlin! Senator Franziska Giffey has announced an international competition to redesign the iconic ICC congress centre. Just a few years ago, politicians were calling for the ICC to be bulldozed. Now, they’re calling the ICC a potential “Berliner Centre Pompidou". Together with Airport Tegel, Fehrbelliner Platz and the Bierpinsel, the ICC is one of the key surviving examples of West Berlin’s 1970s space age brutalist architecture. When completed in 1979, it was a statement piece intended to show the world that the walled off city was still modern and relevant. Thanks to recent exhibitions at the Berlinische Galerie. Landesmuseum für Moderne Kunst, Fotografie und Architektur and also initiatives from the likes of BUREAU N, the ICC is finally getting the recognition it deserves. This is a fantastic opportunity for Berlin based architects to make this iconic site relevant for future generations. The National Pavilion UAE announces the title of its exhibition at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia: “Pressure Cooker.” This exhibition will be curated by Azza Aboualam, Emirati architect and Assistant Professor at the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University. The exhibition highlights the interconnected global and local histories surrounding this issue. The exhibition’s purpose is to encourage local communities to take collective responsibility instead of relying on centralized innovations and global preservatives.
