Earlier this year, I submitted an unsolicited proposal to company leadership: get me an airplane, and I can accelerate product development. They listened, and last spring, a classic Cessna was allocated to our engineering team. Being able to immediately flight-test our work has been incredible. We’ve fixed bugs and reprogrammed units while in flight. I’ve realized that changes that made sense on the ground didn’t work well in the air. The feedback loop for changes has shrunk from days or weeks to minutes or hours. In elementary school physics, we learned that work is the product of force and displacement. We were asked, “If you push on a wall and it doesn’t move, has any work been done?” The answer was no. Every team I’ve been on works hard, and every company I’ve worked for claims to have a ‘fast-paced’ environment. But I have to ask: is their hard work getting results, or are they just pushing against a brick wall? Are they fighting corporate bloat, thrashing on leadership's fire of the day, or actually making progress? Here, it feels like we’re making real progress. It seems like the displacement we’re getting from the force we’re applying is substantial—and that’s a great feeling.
