"SEO is dead" is lazy groupthink. Anyone who says this is probably driven by one of three forces: 😨 Fear. People see how AI is changing content production and Google search, assume they can't adapt well enough, and choose to divest from SEO instead of figuring out how it works in the new world. 💲 Greed. A "thought leader" wants to sell you their product, service, or worldview, so they denigrate their alternatives. But the thing about REAL thought leadership is... it depends on intellectual honesty. Look at the influencers you follow. If they're not honest, unsubscribe; you don't want them infecting your thinking. 🧠 Bias. In internet terms, SEO is old. Things like AI content and video podcasts are new. And you've probably heard of that classic psychological phenomenon: recency bias. Which we could also call newphoria 😄. But while buying the latest phone is fine, buying the latest marketing tactic and abandoning what's tried and true is... not fine. So how should we actually think about SEO? As a reliable channel that requires an updated strategy and can work really well in tandem with social media. SEO isn't dead, but it is getting harder and more competitive. And the main way to keep your SEO strategy relevant is to... FOCUS ON DRIVING REVENUE. If you've invested in SEO but you don't know which keywords and content drive revenue, let's talk! Digital marketing is easy... Well, sort of. We all know that the digital marketing world moves FAST and how important it is to stay ahead of the curve. But when it boils down to it, there are some aspects that we just KNOW work. 1. ENGAGE ENGAGE ENGAGE And also - listen. Don't just post and move on – interact and immerse yourself. What is your audience saying? How are they responding? What are their interests? What are they looking for? It could be as simple as posting a poll or replying to a LinkedIn comment. Or, take it a step further by stepping into your audience’s shoes and immersing yourself in their world to see things from their perspective. Participate in some social listening. Recently, I've been joining Facebook groups and Reddit threads that our audience frequents to understand their thoughts, questions, and opinions through their eyes. 2. OPTIMISATION It's not new, but it's crucial: SEO. SEO isn't just about keyword research and implementation on your website; it encompasses everything. You should be thinking about SEO at every stage of your marketing strategy. Carrie Rose was spot-on when she highlighted the importance of SEO keywords on TikTok a while back, as the platform increasingly functions as a search engine. It's essential to integrate SEO practices across all aspects of digital marketing. 3. The big one, the obvious one, and the one you're probably sick of hearing about, AI. Whether you like it or not, AI is here to stay and in a BIG way. But, don’t fear AI, utilise it. Using AI can help you in so many ways, whether that's to remove a background from an image on Canva, or to tailor content specifically for your audience with the help from ChatGPT, AI can really help marketers seeking to enhancing user experience and boosting engagement whilst being time efficient. *if used correctly.
