We’re working with the Penobscot Nation to return about 30,000 acres located within the heart of the Nation’s ancestral hunting and fishing territories, known as Wáhsehtəkʷ. New Guidelines on Protected Areas:"Designing and managing protected and conserved areas to support inland water ecosystems and biodiversity"

Aurora's Kanawha River property is as biodiverse as it is beautiful. Located in the highly biodiverse area of Southern Appalachia, this forest is considered to have a high conservation value and is home to a wide array of species that drive biodiversity in the region, including 33 species of conservation interest as well as four species of protected freshwater mussels. Protecting and improving biodiversity isn't just a co-benefit of our work - it contributes to forest health and resilience, and is a key indicator of environmental health. Join me and my colleagues at Nature for Water / The Nature Conservancy as we delve into the Watershed Investment Program (WIP) cycle and the process of engaging Indigenous Peoples and local communities by working together at the earliest stages. Building strong, trust-based partnerships with these groups, who depend on and steward many of the basin's ecosystem services, is essential. Indigenous Peoples may be the most relevant knowledge carriers and partners in WIP preparation and implementation processes, as “they have proven to be the most effective stewards of nature in the world—achieving greater conservation results and sustaining more biodiversity than government-protected areas!

63-year-old Lengima Kundayo is a key figure within the Makame WMA, the body responsible for the protection of the forests that form the Makame Savannah project. 🌳 🎙️ Kundayo explains that "As children, we lived close to nature. Wildlife was always around us and we saw elephants, lions and antelopes." Kundayo has long played a role in raising awareness within his community about the importance of environmental conservation, and more recently about the forest protection carbon project. 🎙️"People were skeptical at first and did not understand how important the trees are. How do trees produce oxygen without a nose, some asked" Kundayo says, laughing. Things have now changed and there is now community wide consensus that the protection of their forests bring numerous benefits, not only to the environment but to community members across all five participating villages.
