It was once again a very interesting UIC Meeting of Panel of Structural Experts in Paris with numerous infrastructure managers from Europe. First-hand updates on ongoing innovation projects, developments in standardisation at the UIC and CEN offered great added value. I took the opportunity to thank my colleagues for their much-appreciated contribution to the benchmark on Knowledge Management & Leadership. I conducted the benchmark to answer the question "How much expertise do infrastructure operators need and how can this expertise be secured in the long term?" Here my conclusion: 1)   Knowledge management does not stop at the company's boundaries; external factors such as gap of skilled employees and availability of training programmes must also be taken into account. 2)   A high level of externalisation at infrastructure operators creates the risk that knowledge will be lost and the necessary skills can no longer be covered. 3)   In-house expertise and resources are required to build new engineering structures safely and efficiently and to be able to use existing engineering structures as long and efficiently as possible. 4)   Knowledge management methods will only be successful if there is an open culture of information and knowledge sharing. This requires a maximally pronounced transformational leadership culture and a moderately pronounced transactional culture.
