Wall Street Wants In on America’s Battery Storage Boom Solar surge lets battery companies charge up when power prices are low, sell when high The Wall Street Journal Sheldon Kimber sees a lucrative opportunity in bottling sunshine. The 46-year-old entrepreneur is installing hundreds of giant batteries the size of shipping containers around sun-soaked Texas and California. The batteries charge up during the day when solar power is abundant. When electricity demand rises in the evening, straining the power grid, Kimber sells that stored energy at higher prices. Kimber is betting that surging power demand and extreme weather events will make it an increasingly profitable trade. “The only thing we can guarantee in the energy transition is that volatility will increase,” said Kimber, chief executive of renewable energy developer Intersect Power. Kimber is part of a nationwide race to profit from battery storage, which helps stabilize the outdated power grid and smooth out intermittent electricity sources such as wind and solar. Risk...We don't talk about it enough. Do you know what risk really is? Money. The risk of buying a solution that's a few dollars cheaper, and hoping it doesn't cost you 2x more to install and maintain. The risk of buying a solution that's coming from a country with unreliable logistics, and hoping it doesn't push your schedule months to the right. The risk of buying from a firm that you or your teammates have never dealt with, and hoping that their quality will be up to par. The risk of buying from a firm who has no meaningful human presence near your site to support commissioning and operations, and hoping that there are no major issues that your EPC or asset manager can't handle. I've been deploying projects of all kinds for almost 18 years. Long enough to know that what can go wrong usually does. And the unknown unknowns are too expensive to leave to chance with an unproven partner. It all comes down to people in the end. In the utility-scale energy storage business customers have many options now. But Tesla is proving that you are not taking a risk with our technology and you can depend on our team to deliver energy storage solutions and all the services and commitments that go with that. In fact, our product hardware and software design and continuous improvement helps ensure a derisked project deployment. Don't take my word for it, ask any of our repeat customers. Years ago, customer's lenders and their engineers used to ask us a hundred questions to poke holes in our technology and make sure we were supplying a "bankable" asset. I never have those kinds of calls anymore, knock on wood. Answer is storage is valuable at a specific time and location. Batteries have supplied consistently 1 GW everyday from 4 pm to 8’pm in June in Texas. Cumulative energy storage in the US will near 20 GW in 2024. Storage capacity in the U.S. has grown enough in recent years to be able to power many millions of homes, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.
