Day 2 of the 16 days of activism, why does it start with men? Violence against women and girls is rooted in patriarchal power imbalances which perpetuate gender inequality. Generational and social norms and acceptance create an environment where sexism and misogyny continues to allow men to excuse abusive behaviour by creating a lens through which women are not equal What can you do to break the cycle, create change and further women’s equality? Talk about harmful gender stereotypes, call out the sexist jokes and behaviour, listen to women and girls about their experiences and create space for their voices to be heard, challenge victim blaming, there are so many ways to support women and girls but we need collective change! #NoExcuse #ItStartsWithMen https://lnkd.in/engiTZSt

Violence against women and girls remains one of the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violations in the world. Globally, almost one in three women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their life. For at least 51,100 women in 2023, the cycle of gender-based violence ended with one final and brutal act—their murder by partners and family members. That means a woman was killed every 10 minutes. The solution lies in robust responses, holding perpetrators accountable, and accelerating action through well-resourced national strategies and increased funding to women’s rights movements. UNITE campaign draws attention to the alarming escalation of violence against women under the theme, “Every 11 Minutes, one woman is killed and “UNITE to End Violence against Women.” The goal is to create a global platform that highlights the need for gender equality and for the elimination of violence against women in all its forms, both at home and in the workplace. It serves as a powerful reminder that violence against women is not just a private issue, but a widespread social challenge that demands systemic change. 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence started on 25 November and ends on 10 December. In the words of UN Women: Nearly one in three women experience violence in their lifetime. Girls are at particular risk of violence—1 in 4 adolescent girls is abused by their partners. For thousands of women, the cycle of gender-based violence ended with one final and brutal act—their murder by partners and family members. Femicide (or feminicide) is the intentional killing of a women or girl because of her gender. It is a universal problem, and the most brutal, visible, and extreme manifestation of the cycle of gender-based violence that women and girls endure. Violence against women and girls can and must be prevented. Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Despite the adoption of the Convention of the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) by the UN General Assembly in 1979, violence against women and girls remains a pervasive problem worldwide. 1 in 3 women around the world experience sexual and gender-based violence in their lifetime. In Afghanistan, the Taliban authorities are being brought before the International Court of Justice for the crime of gender apartheid by Canada, Australia, Germany and the Netherlands. ACFID continues to stand in solidarity with Afghan women and civil society, aswell as civil society organisations tackling gender inequality. This day is a stark reminder of our collective responsibility to end the scourge of gender-based violence and discrimination, and for all to take action and not be bystander.
