Meta-owned WhatsApp is testing a new feature allowing users to share files like photos, videos, and documents with nearby contacts without an internet connection. This innovative update promises greater convenience, especially in situations with limited or no internet access. Similar to file-sharing apps like ShareIT and Xender, WhatsApp's new feature utilizes Bluetooth technology to establish a local connection between devices in close proximity. Users will have complete control over this functionality, opting to enable sharing with nearby contacts or keeping it disabled for privacy reasons. While the update might require access to system files, photo galleries, and location data to facilitate sharing, WhatsApp assures users that privacy remains a top priority. Shared files will be encrypted, and phone numbers will be masked during the transfer, ensuring the security of sensitive information. Currently undergoing beta testing, this feature's presence suggests an upcoming public release. Although an official launch date hasn't been announced, this update holds the potential to significantly improve the user experience for those who frequently encounter situations with limited internet connectivity. #whatsappfeatures #newfeatures #internetaccess #sensitiveinformation #bluetoothtechnology #cohortmax

WhatsApp is making a massive change to the way it saves your contacts https://ift.tt/vXGEIc4 Illustration: The Verge WhatsApp is getting a built-in contact manager that lets you save contacts within the app so you don’t lose them if you switch phones. WhatsApp typically relies on the smartphone address book it runs on to hold and manage contacts. But that can be a problem for users who lose their device and fail to back up their phone’s contacts, people who share phones, or those who manage multiple accounts with separate contacts on one device. To start, you’ll be able to save contacts on WhatsApp Web and Windows and Meta says that you’ll “eventually” be able to do so on other linked devices. Contacts saved in WhatsApp use a new “privacy-preserving” storage technology called Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS) that Meta explains keeps names and... Enhancing WhatsApp Status: A Proposal for Extended Visibility In today's fast-paced world, communication has evolved significantly. From letters and telegrams to telephones and smartphones, we've seen remarkable advancements. Social media now plays a crucial role in our lives, enabling us to share both joyful and challenging moments with others. WhatsApp has become a popular platform not just for chatting, but also for sharing personal updates through status. However, the current limitation of a 24-hour visibility for statuses can lead to missed connections, especially for those who may not check frequently. I propose that WhatsApp introduce an option to extend status visibility beyond 24 hours. When creating a status, users could be prompted to choose between showing their status for 24 hours or 48 hours. Another way, as the 24-hour mark approaches, users could receive a notification reminding them that their status is about to expire, with an option to extend its visibility. To improve the user experience, statuses already viewed by users could be indicated with a blue circle, while new statuses would continue to show a green circle, and those that are yet to be seen would remain grey. This change could enhance engagement and ensure that important updates are not overlooked. Similar enhancements could be beneficial for status features on platforms like Instagram and Facebook as well. WhatsApp now allows users to privately mention contacts in Status updates WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to privately mention selected contacts in their Status updates. This means that only the mentioned contacts will receive a discreet notification, ensuring their privacy is protected. The goal is to create a greater sense of interaction within specific contacts, ensuring important updates or moments are brought to their attention. Additionally, WhatsApp has officially introduced a swipeable Navigation Bar in accordance with Google's Material Design guidelines. This change has been in testing for almost a year and reiterates the app's commitment to keeping up with design trends. Overall, these updates aim to enhance the user experience and make communication more efficient on the popular messaging platform. WhatsApp services have been down on cellular networks across Pakistan since 10 Muharram (Ashura), affecting millions of Jazz, Telenor, Ufone 4G, and Zong CMPak Ltd subscribers. Users have reported that while WhatsApp calls and text messages are functional, media files like videos and images are not loading as usual. Interestingly, WhatsApp remains operational on WiFi connections. The issue peaked during busy hours following Youm e Ashur, prompting numerous complaints on social media. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has not issued an official statement explaining the ongoing disruption. Initially, the problem extended to other Metaverse apps such as Instagram and Meta Facebook, causing frequent crashes. However, the current disruption primarily impacts #WhatsApp for mobile network users. Earlier in the week, local authorities imposed restrictions on #Facebook without official announcement, affecting access through various internet service providers (#ISPs). Despite expectations that these restrictions would end by July 17, uncertainty remains about their removal. #DigitalPakistan #TechUpdate

Can anybody explain why most Americans 🇺🇸 don´t use WhatsApp and still prefer texts (SMS)? 🥹 The challenge is not the product; WhatsApp is a million times better than SMS text. If I text an American friend (90%), I generally send an SMS; for everything else, I use WhatsApp. Of course, I know many who use it, but you still have to ask to be sure if they do. The only thing I like about it is that it feels old-fashioned. I remember when smartphones didn´t exist in college. As of February 2024, there were 98 million WhatsApp users in the US and 100 million monthly active users as of July 2024. Yes, it's growing fast. WhatsApp has over 2 billion active users worldwide every month, so maybe it´s a matter of time before we see it. After my nonrepresentative poll with friends in the US, the most used answer was: we have used it for many years; it´s familiar and reliable (a very relevant quality for a product). Am I wrong? What do you think? #whatsapp #SMS #questions #unitedstates
