Love this! Lawyer friends 2 take-always: 1) citizen juries can decide much more than whether someone is guilty of a crime. 2) How would jury service (especially long-term grand jury service) change if we spent time on relationship building before people deliberated on major decisions?
💡 Excellent piece by Gideon Lichfield on how to reach solutions on deeply divided issues, using a lighter touch version of a citizens’ assembly. I love how this group Starts With Us remixes deliberative democracy with community organizing and relationship building tactics. They start by selecting a small but diverse sample of the population that ALSO is screened for their ability to effectively work together (a perfect random sample is nice, but a good enough sample that is primed to get work done can be better!). Then there’s a full day for trust building and relationship building (relationship before task!). Only then do the participants hear from experts and deliberate. There’s still room for growth, especially with building this into government decision-making, so that there’s more follow through on outcomes. But this kind of experimentation with new approaches to democracy is a smart and necessary step in the right direction. 👏🏼 h/t Micah L. Sifry https://lnkd.in/eaA6pV_t

On this web page, https://lnkd.in/gvqSFj9E, you'll now learn about by my ten (10) years of service with two local police departments on Long Beach Island, NJ, through their ocean-rescue units. As I shared with Katie Porter's attorney, Jerry Singleton today and others, that is "public service" with a capital "P" and is not about "compensation" or "fame" or "followers."

Good advice
This morning many are asking "How can we help?" Here is what we know: the American Red Cross Serving Nebraska and the Omaha Police Department are still assessing damage and needs and will share details when they know more. Once these channels share news, here on LinkedIn and on X and Facebook, please re-share and offer help however you can.

🆘 Break the Chains of Human Trafficking! The information was published on Friday, July 5th. Every day, countless individuals are trapped in the harrowing reality of human trafficking. This image captures the stark, haunting journey many face as they are stripped of their freedom and dignity. Human trafficking is a global crisis that preys on the vulnerable, exploiting their hopes and dreams. It is a stark reminder that we must stand united against this crime, advocate for the victims, and work tirelessly towards a world where every person is free. At United4Change Center, we are committed to ending human trafficking by: ¤ Raising awareness and educating communities. ¤ Empowering survivors through support and resources. ¤ Advocating for stronger laws and enforcement. Let's amplify the voices of the unheard and shine a light on this dark reality. Join us in the fight to end human trafficking. Together, we can make a difference. 💪🌍
