Great to hear from Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz, National Housing Supply and Affordability Council at National Press Club of Australia today. In response to a question on the role of local government, Ms. Lloyd-Hurwitz highlighted that local councils play a pivotal role in the delivery of new housing, and their influence is crucial for successful urban planning. A well-functioning housing market is essential, and councils, with the right support, can be key drivers in this effort. #housing #localgovernment

Nice!!! The Moving to Work (MTW) Demonstration program expansion allows the 14 selected housing agencies to test innovative strategies for improving administrative efficiency and resident services. By granting flexibility to these agencies, they can develop customized solutions tailored to their communities' needs, potentially informing future national housing policies. This can benefit jurisdictions by encouraging creative problem-solving, increasing housing choices for families, and sharing best practices that can be scaled nationally. Keep an eye out for what these jurisdictions accomplish because it may be headed your way if they succeed.

Inner West Council is using heritage policy as an excuse to push housing away from its most advantaged suburbs. Highlighted in yellow are the stations earmarked for more density, 4 of the bottom 5 when sorted by SEIFA disadvantage. Places like Marrickville and Ashfield are objectively great places to live and would be even better with more people, but this demonstrates that planning reinforces inequity not just between councils (where targets are lower in the east) but within them as well. This morning/evening (delete as applicable) ECF and Astrolabe Group held a webinar on affordable housing delivery in London and Sydney, and it was a belter. The two greatest cities in the world (in my opinion) share many challenges when it comes to addressing issues in the housing market, and the session touched on several of those. Belinda Comninos GAICD did an amazing job of setting out the context in Sydney and NSW, in particular, and I had a stab at summing things up in London. The two cities share lots in common - high prices for buyers and renters, an overall lack of supply and a need for significant policy intervention. Panels can be dull as dishwater on occasion, but this was anything but! Thank you so much to Paul Scully, Jackie Sadek and Tom Copley for your illuminating contributions. We touched on everything from planning reform, the role of local councils, artificial intelligence, and how to do density well. I hope the conversations keep going. UDIA NSW has partnered with Astrolabe Group to run the ruler over the feasibility of development in the TOD sites announced by the NSW Government. While the TODs are a public policy step in the right direction and it’s good practice to have higher densities close to infrastructure and amenities, the current economic conditions will mean many of these sites will remain unfeasible without additional interventions by government or changes in economic conditions. This research sends a clear signal to Government about the need to look at all policy levers to achieve their housing target of 75,000 homes completed each year for the next 5 years. Relying on just a few policy adjustments will mean the Government will fall short of its target. Industry and Government have the same objective…creating more places citizens can call home. The Consortium of Associations in the South East (CASE) have commissioned research to understand housing need ahead of the next general election. The report highlights a concerning shortfall of 1.2 million homes over 10 years, 80% of which represents the need for social tenures. This includes a particular #socialhousing need in the South East.
