Moshin Ali, Assistant Auditor General, Fiji, speaks about how Pacific SAIs may see IT infrastructure adoption and using technology as a large investment and change, but notes the importance of taking small steps to get there and the gained efficiencies of digitalization. His SAI notes that they are trying to move away from reliance on a whole of government data center, but the cost of hosting their own data center is great, and may be a similar challenge faced by other SAIs in the Pacific. #PASAICongress2024 #pacificauditorsworkingtogether

🎙 Thank you to everyone who joined our webinar, co-hosted by CISPE (Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers in Europe) and The European Data Centre Association - EUDCA, sponsored by #EUSEW. 📽 Missed out to join us live? The recording is now available: https://lnkd.in/epK2Wq7Q The consensus after a fascinating discussion: While progress has been made in using data centres as an alternative source of heat, achieving a #NetZero future requires removing policy and bureaucratic hurdles, creating a market, and fostering collaboration among different stakeholders. Marco Bolchi opened the discussion by explaining how uncertainties within the regulatory framework hamper the synergies between data centres and #energy consumers. Regulators, he said, can “establish policies and guidelines to actually promote data heat use and then create a market.” Dr. Béla Waldhauser agreed, explaining how the lack of a regulatory framework has limited private sector investment. “It's not only about sustainability, it's also about being commercially attractive.” However, the path to using heat from data centres for our communities requires stakeholder collaboration, said Felix Kriedemann. He cited the example of an energy community, a democratic legal entity that provides renewable energy solutions. “What this means is essentially that citizens come together, they create a legal entity, most of the time as a cooperative, so that they can become active participants in the energy market and reap these benefits.” But, as Nikolaos Kontinakis pointed out, this comes back to the need for a market. One of the reasons why heat from data centres hasn’t been widely used in his view, is because the market for it hasn’t been created yet. Nonetheless, if the heat from data centres can be used widely, it can contribute to the continent becoming carbon-free, according to Pauline Lucas: “In the near future, data centres will be our sources to be carbon neutral.” 👏 Thanks to all speakers for their insights and to Emma Fryer for moderating a great discussion. Digital commons (here: https://lnkd.in/d6RN3M-A) and public value-centred infrastructures (here: https://lnkd.in/ds8ZjxSs) are finally getting momentum as a robust alternative to current market- and/or state-driven (mainstream) approaches to the digital transformation. What we still miss is robust empirical evidence and ongoing monitoring of these approaches and related initiatives to highlight barriers and enablers to such a paradigmatic shift in digital governance. In this respect, it is definitely worth resharing an open-access article centred around the idea of the Data Republic as a systemically fair ecosystem (at the convergence of open data and data commons), which I wrote last year together with Bastiaan van Loenen and published in the journal Data & Policy (Data for Policy CIC): "A Fourth Way to the Digital Transformation: The Data Republic as a Fair Data Ecosystem" Here: https://lnkd.in/eHaZKQpT Feel free to circulate & comment! #datacommons #opendata #datarepublic #digitalecosystems #digitalgovernance
