Feeling like your father is prescribed too many drugs? You're not alone. Overprescription is a growing concern, especially for seniors. It can lead to harmful side effects, drug interactions, or even hospitalizations. When it comes to your loved one's health, taking action is crucial. Here’s a step-by-step on what you can do: 1️⃣ Review the Medications: List all the medications your father takes, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. 2️⃣ Schedule a Doctor's Appointment: Discuss your concerns with your father's primary care physician. Bring the medication list for a thorough review. 3️⃣ Ask Questions: Understand why each medication is prescribed. Ask about possible side effects and interactions. 4️⃣ Seek a Second Opinion: If you’re still unsure, consult a geriatric pharmacist or another healthcare professional. Fresh eyes can catch things others might miss. 5️⃣ Monitor Closely: Keep track of any changes in your father’s health and how he responds to each medication. Communication is key. Seniors deserve to feel safe and cherished. Let’s be proactive about their well-being. Have you faced similar concerns with medication management for a loved one? "A pill for every ill" is a phrase used to describe the over-reliance on medication in modern western medicine. Instead of routinely handing out medicines, prescribers using ScriptSwitch Prescribing have the option to see a switch to a 'social prescription' instead - that might be information, signposting, use of an app or a referral - supporting Social Prescribing (National Academy for Social Prescribing). In 2023, Optum offered 2,410 recommendations promoting self-care instead of issuing a prescription 🥰 A really good example of this is our customers in NHS Scotland. They use information messages to offer patients struggling to sleep an alternative to medication for insomnia. Patients are offered access to Sleepio - an online sleep improvement programme, which has helped 76% of patients achieve clinical improvement in insomnia. A proportion of GP consultations and prescriptions could be avoided by the safe management of common, self-limiting conditions by individuals either at home or, if needed, with advice and/or treatment from a community pharmacy - if we present the information at the point of prescribing then this gives the clinician a better choice, thinking 'beyond the pill'. What alternative self-care would you suggest over issuing a prescription? #socialprescribing #healthcare #pharmacists
