🔎 Financing, attendance, lobbyists... Catch up with what happened at COP29 this week. 1️⃣ COP29 kicks off: The United Nations' annual climate conference began on 11 November in Baku, Azerbaijan with a focus on funding for developing nations. "The actual negotiations in Baku will make this one of the most important, and fiercely contested, UN summits to date," writes Simon Mundy, moral money editor with the Financial Timeshttps://lnkd.in/eErfGb3U 2️⃣ Poor attendance: COP29 has been marred by a string of high-profile no-shows, including European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and outgoing US president Joe Biden. "Their absence will surely shift the dynamics of COP29, potentially altering discussions on essential issues like climate finance, emission reduction commitments and global climate resilience initiatives," says energy expert Dante Powell. https://lnkd.in/e4ShVgYM 3️⃣ Fossil fuel transition: This year is on track to set the record for global carbon emissions, with a rise of 0.8% expected. "It is really high time to focus on phasing out fossil fuels instead of struggling with pointless bureaucratic monsters for forest and land management," writes Kasimir P. Nemestothy, the head of energy economics and energy policy at the Austrian Chamber of Agriculture. https://lnkd.in/ek6dFidq 4️⃣ Global heating to increase: The planet is on course for a temperature rise of 2.7C above the pre-industrial average by the end of the century if current policies remain. "Key challenges remain: Fossil fuel subsidies are at an all-time high, and funding for fossil fuel-prolonging projects quadrupled between 2021 and 2022," says Frederic Hans, senior climate policy advisor at Climate Action Tracker, which carried out the analysis.  https://lnkd.in/ev4YRPFY 5️⃣ COP is 'not fit for purpose': A group of high-profile climate voices has said the conference should only be hosted by countries which have shown support for climate action and have restricted fossil fuel lobbying. "During COP1, global temperatures were only 0.4°C above pre-industrial levels," writes Muhammad Urs, founder of a climate action group. "Today, they’ve soared, underscoring the urgent need for real action over prolonged negotiations". https://lnkd.in/e6Mb9iEe Follow COP29 news on LinkedIn ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e2j9eupJ 🎙️ What do you think leaders should focus on at COP? Mitigating climate change means reducing the flow of heat-trapping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This involves cutting greenhouse gases from main sources such as power plants, factories, cars, and farms. Forests, oceans, and soil also absorb and store these gases, and are an important part of the solution. Reducing and avoiding our emissions requires us to reshape everything we do — from how we power our economy and grow our food, to how we travel and live, and the products we consume. It is a problem felt locally and globally. So International cooperation is required. Tnx

Sorry but all this is shite. David Bellamy was right stating that’s it’s a natural thing that the world does. Extreme cold then extreme heat. It’s nothing to do with CO2!! Plants are thriving and performing. If such a problem why make world using diesel plant equipment to dig up minerals when you could go “ hydrogen” which is the much cleaner way forward but probably not a money spinner for all these globalists millionaire/big business owners who are cashing in on net zero unicorn solutions. It’s about profits not preservation!!

The writing is on the wall Just look at the non attendees The lack of interest and enthusiasm COP 29 and every next COP events will surely fail The solution Drop the Net Zero charade and do something more positive Adopt a 35 year tree and shrub planting programme A few trillion trees and shrubs would be a good start Use the armies of each country to plant them Then task the conservationists of each country to maintain them The World will then breathe again. Job done TonyTighe No one is interested

To get the use of fossil fuel down effective alternatives need to be in place to replace coal fired power stations etc. It's big industrial countries like china that would listen if you had effective alternatives that were cheaper to run.. A lot of promises have been made by countries putting in huge amounts of money to countries to help the situation.but don't.. This cop 29 is nothing but a toothless tiger.. The whole thing is to slow down global warming, it isn't working though. What does that say... Peoples tax being wasted on something that doesn't work..

The discussions at COP29 highlight both the urgency of the climate crisis and the challenges in addressing it effectively. 🌍 1️⃣ Funding for developing nations is critical, but meaningful commitments must translate into timely action to ensure vulnerable communities aren’t left behind. 2️⃣ The absence of key leaders is disappointing. Leadership at such a crucial moment is about showing up and driving change, not sitting on the sidelines. 3️⃣ With carbon emissions reaching record highs, the focus must shift to concrete plans for phasing out fossil fuels, alongside rapid investment in renewable energy. 4️⃣ The 2.7°C trajectory is alarming. Without bold decisions now, we risk pushing beyond irreversible tipping points. 5️⃣ Perhaps it’s time to rethink the format of COP. Hosting rights tied to climate leadership and a ban on fossil fuel lobbying could foster more meaningful outcomes. What’s clear is that incremental progress won’t cut it anymore. Leaders must prioritize collaboration, accountability, and actionable solutions at COP29. #COP29 #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Leadership #GreenerTogether

Cop what ever number, is a total waste of time. It’s never going to be carbon neutral. You have so many attendees with to much influence on fossil fuel. With no what to help poor countries with cash for alternative energy project. As for holding it in Bakku. Please correct me if I am wrong. This was the first export hub for crude oil. Totally Farcical

Cop29 ...where there is no "cop on!" and where Sky News Australia investigated that the elites having turned up in their private jets would speak about fossil fuel reduction whilst right outside the conference hall in Baku are 2 big oil fields extracting oil. Azerbaijan is a country that has natural oil fields. You couldn't make it up. Whomever organised that blunder never did the "background check" eh!🤣 A Climate hoax for money is all it is about invented by WEF wet wipe Al Gore. The Earth is NOT warming up if records are only looking to the industrial revolution marker either. Meantime back in Britain, WEF boy Starmer was caught with his entourage the weekend, escaping the farmers via a back door in a load of Range Rover diesel 4 x 4s.🤣😉 Roll on the comedy January 2025 at Davos...more elites in private jets gather. Give us all a laugh as the truth is coming out.

What was the opening speech “oil and gas is a gift from god” 🤔 😂

Get the Chinese around the table showing interest, all we’re doing is shifting our jobs there and anywhere cheaper, and shifting our carbon output elsewhere,in the mean time jobs are lost, what sense does that make.
