September 13th is #WorldSepsis Day. This year, I am pleased to share our recent study, "Social determinants of health and sepsis: a case-control study" published in the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia (CJA). We found that there were nearly twice the number #sepsis cases (33.3 cases per 100,000 vs 15.4 cases per 100,000) and #sepsis deaths (8.3 deaths per 100,000 vs 4.5 deaths per 100,000) among people living in structurally disadvantaged neighbourhoods. We emphasize the importance of integrating individual-level social determinants of health in health records to inform early interventions and downstream care. Lot's of work ahead to understand the mechanisms by which social determinants of health affect health and healthcare to support responsible use of evidence and equitable healthcare practices. Thank you Lise Diebel and Hamilton Health Sciences for writing about this study, and the ongoing work to reduce the burden of sepsis and support equitable practices at HHS.
