The 5Ws & 1H (Who, What, Where, When, Why and How) are the cornerstones of journalism. Sadly, modern journalism often falls short. Incomplete stories abound, leaving readers with unanswered questions. Time to get back to the basics.

Is who pays for lunch the right question? As GC I rarely met anyone for lunch! Coffee, yes. Brunch, on occasion. Lunch? only if you were super special. In fact I had a small group of legal friends we somewhat ironically called ourselves "Ladies That Lunch". Frankly I rarely had time: I had just about enough bandwidth to get my work done and then get home to my young family. There is a somewhat obvious elephant in the room to the story. Anyone else spot it? I'll give you a hint. This doesn't include a photo of any woman... In a few weeks I'm presenting to a leading law firm on the Keys to Good Business Development (aka, "What Clients Wish you Knew about BD"). It doesn't (currently) mention lunch! So what's a better question? How can we build meaningful business relationships in the modern world? PS I have nothing against lunch. Love it! I do however have an issue with it being viewed as the most important means to building business relationships. #amillionwaystoBD #businessdevelopment #inclusivity #cofferus #orteaifyou'reaBritlikeme
So you want to impress someone with a business lunch? Here's how you do it and -- more importantly -- who should pay for it. Read for free on FT Edit, a daily selection of the best FT journalism.
