This month marks a pivotal moment in history — the 56th anniversary of the signing of the Fair Housing Act. As we commemorate this landmark legislation, we also reflect on the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose unwavering commitment to equality and justice paved the way for its passage. In the wake of Dr. King's tragic assassination, the Fair Housing Act emerged as a beacon of hope, a tangible step toward dismantling the barriers of discrimination in housing. Yet, over five decades later, our work is far from finished. The vision Dr. King articulated, of a nation where all are judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character, remains elusive for far too many. Just last year, NFHA reported that there were over 33,000 fair housing complaints throughout the country-the highest number of reported complaints since we've been tracking this data. Moreover, millions of incidents of discrimination go unreported, particularly as we now tackle the new frontier of technology and algorithmic bias. As Dr. King reminded us, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." It is up to us to bend that arc, to continue the fight for fair and inclusive housing for all. Please support the important work we do at NFHA to advance housing justice by donating at least $56 during Fair Housing Month. Together, we can build a future where every person has access to safe, affordable, and equitable housing — a future that fulfills the promise of Dr. King's dream. Thank you for standing with us in this vital mission. https://lnkd.in/eM248xXu In Solidarity, National Fair Housing Alliance

Marc's Remarks - Weekly insights, community news, and updates from our President and CEO. October 23, 2024 28 Out of 26,000! "I hope you are enjoying the Sukkot holiday, known as “z'man simchateinu,” or “season of our joy.” Sukkot is the only holiday in the Torah where we are not only invited to be joyful, we are obligated to do so. Being another short week due to the holidays, I want to share some important announcements: According to the IRS, there are over 26,000 nonprofit organizations operating in the State of Oregon. Last week, the Nonprofit Association of Oregon shared its list of the 100 Best Nonprofits to Work For in Oregon 2024. The list is divided into three categories: large (50+ employees), medium (25-49 employees), and small (up to 24 employees) organizations and each is given an overall score. I am enormously proud to share that the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland was ranked the 28th best nonprofit to work for in the state! In the “small nonprofit” category we were #18 (fitting for a Jewish organization). I am also pleased that BB360 (formerly BB Camp) was 80th overall in the state and #20 in the “medium nonprofit” category. Very impressive to have two Jewish organizations in the top 100 across Oregon. I hope we have many more in the years ahead. I keep seeing Linkedin posts from the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) United Kingdom about the "good" work they do. What most people don't know is that RRT is the "charity" face of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church (PBCC) https://lnkd.in/eDVCTxpc a very wealthy organisation ruled by "the man of god" or "the elect vessel" an Australian called Bruce Hales. However, the story is not quite so simple. The PBCC is a worldwide religious cult with approximately 55,000 "members". The members are born in to the cult and and conditioned from babyhood to follow their interpretation of the bible. The PBCC were formerly known as the exclusive brethren, changing the name to placate the Charity Commission. A core principle of the PBCC is separation from evil; evil being anyone who is not a member of the PBCC. And even worse than evil is anyone who has dared to escape from the clutches of the PBCC, where it has been known for the leaders to demand members "pray" for their removal (die) of those who've left. The latest post from the Rapid Relief Team highlighted their "great" work supporting She Inspires 2024, with 450 girls playing football in Liverpool. The irony is, the PBCC doesn't allow its members, especially women, to play team sports, certainly not with none members. In fact women are subjected to men, especially once married. A wife is there to serve her husband who must be obeyed. Married women aren't allowed to work; they're not allowed education beyond statutory requirements. Sadly, the rules of the PBCC and the conditioning of its members from a young age has ripped families apart. If a member sees the light and escapes the brain washing, they are withdrawn from, meaning nobody within, including parents, siblings, spouses, children or grand children are allowed contact with them. How do I know this? My wife escaped just over 10 years ago facing a life or death situation. The price she has paid is beyond most people's imagination, but what is the price of freedom. Check out a recent podcast at https://lnkd.in/eMmhdqHV Please take care.

Feedback from yesterday's free Mission Increase workshop in Huntsville attended by 21 leaders from 15 nonprofits was phenomenal! Register today for a workshop in your city! Birmingham - July 18 Tuscaloosa - July 23 Montgomery - July 25 https://lnkd.in/dPNywERH “The content is so helpful and the resources in the workbook are so helpful. I can’t wait to put them to use!” “Several years ago I attended a 3-day advancement (fundraising) workshop in (another city). I honestly got more useful info from this (2½-hour workshop) than that one." Biggest takeaway: “Clear concise messaging makes all the difference!!!" Biggest takeaway: “Strategy, planning, follow-through.”

MacKenzie Scott's Yield Giving has announced the selection of 361 non-profits for round 2 evaluation, potentially receiving a $640 million award. https://lnkd.in/d2hgdZFt Her strategic philanthropic initiative is poised to create a profound impact on communities worldwide, serving as a beacon for others to join in similar endeavors. However, it's worth noting that only approximately 10% of equitable healthcare non-profits made the cut. The rigorous evaluation process, which includes both Quiet Research and an Open Call, underscores the commitment to ensuring that these funds are allocated where they can make the most difference. Yet, it begs the question: why aren't there more non-profits making it to the second round? Perhaps there's a need for greater awareness on the impact of equitable health, or even a greater emphasis on directly impacting communities in need. #nonprofit #opencallupdate #leverforchange #healthequity

👻 Ghost non-profits These are created by high school students for college applications How's it work? 1. Colleges say community involvement is important 2. The problem is doing real community work is hard 3. So student (along with parents) create bullsh1t non-profit addressing some societal hot-button topic (climate, equity - pick the most virtuous sounding) 4. They then paint a picture of quantifiable outcomes the non-profit has driven (which are conveniently impossible to confirm) 5. Bonus points if they get a local newspaper to cover it further laundering this nonsense 6. Colleges ❤️ this 💩 - "look at the civic-mindedness of our students" 7. Student gets admission to college, essentially rewarded for lying 8. Student abandons non-profit right after admission This is the game some people play as they climb the endless ladder "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes."

Scott Harrison: A Story of Redemption, Compassion, and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World Scott Harrison, the founder of charity: water, embarked on a remarkable journey that transformed countless lives. After a decade immersed in the nightlife scene as a nightclub promoter, Scott experienced a profound shift. He declared spiritual, moral, and emotional bankruptcy, seeking a new purpose. His path led him to a hospital ship off the coast of Liberia, where he witnessed the devastating effects of dirty water firsthand. The stark reality of communities suffering due to lack of access to clean water ignited a fire within him. Scott returned to New York City with a mission: to eradicate the global water crisis. In 2006, he established charity: water, a groundbreaking organization with an audacious goal: to provide clean water to every person living without it. Scott’s vision extended beyond mere charity; he aimed to reinvent the concept of giving. Here’s how he did it: 100% Model: Scott pioneered a radical approach. Every dollar donated would directly fund water projects. Administrative costs? Covered by separate donations. Transparency was paramount, and donors could track the impact of their contributions. 137,000 Water Projects: Over the years, charity: water has raised over $750 million and funded more than 137,000 water projects across 29 countries. These projects will ultimately benefit 17.4 million people with clean, safe drinking water. Thirst: Scott’s inspiring personal story is captured in his book, “Thirst: A Story of Redemption, Compassion, and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World.” All net proceeds from book sales contribute to the cause. How Can You Help? Donate: Consider contributing to charity: water directly. Spread Awareness: Share Scott’s story and the global water crisis with others. Fundraise: Organize events or campaigns to raise funds for clean water projects. Advocate: Advocate for policies and initiatives that prioritize clean water access. Scott Harrison’s journey exemplifies redemption, compassion, and the transformative power of purpose. Let’s join hands to ensure that no one suffers from thirst when the solution lies within our reach. 🌊🙏 Learn more about Scott’s story and support the cause by reading Thirst. Together, we can make a difference! 💧 https://lnkd.in/gcrryxRb

It has now been six days since Karen Korematsu, Executive Director of The Fred T. Korematsu Institute posted, and leadership Seattle University School of Law still has not reached out to her, and has not communicated with her that the center founded with her family's permission will be, at least according to leadership, renamed. A reporter asked me yesterday if I or my position at my new institution would be impacted if the funds were not transferred or if there was a delay. I was able to say, thankfully, that my new faculty position and compensation are not impacted in any way. And not having the funds in no way affects the new institution's welcome of the Korematsu Center or the long term sustainability it is able to offer. Looking back at the first 15 years, I am now able to look ahead to the next 15 as well as the next 50. But not having these funds, an amount a little north of $1 million, will certainly impact our plans. Not having the endowment portion of the funds will impact one project in 5 or 6 years by jeopardizing the permanence of that project—it will still be launched but now with the added responsibility of raising new endowment funds. Not having a couple hundred thousand in current use gift funds, which are RESTRICTED (reminder to leadership Seattle University School of Law), may have a more immediate impact; though being prudent, I have not put into place an immediate plan for their use. I'll note that there is a question about the exact figure, which is why I requested an accounting of the annual endowment allocation over the last several years. In requesting this, I was acting as the appointed agent of the donors through an express agency agreement. When an unsatisfactory response was given, I repeated my request with even more specificity weeks ago. No response. With regard to the purpose of the gifts - because I did the actual asks for these gifts, I am well aware of the purpose, the uses for which these gifts were intended.
"I am deeply disappointed that the leadership of Seattle University & the Seattle University School of Law do not intend to transfer funds when the Korematsu Center moves to its new home at the University of California, Irvine School of Law. These funds were donated to support the work of the Korematsu Center to advance the legacy of my father, Fred Korematsu. This is despite the wishes of donors who want funds transferred. This means that these funds will no longer be available to advance my father’s legacy. In doing so, I believe Seattle University School of Law has betrayed commitments made to my late mother and me and is betraying my father’s legacy." - Dr. Karen Korematsu, President & Founder, Fred T. Korematsu Institute
