CASE STUDY • A BRAND NEW CONCEPT FOR BAECKEREI WICK   Our client Baeckerei Wick is a family business that has successfully become a chain and is integrated with the city where it is located. With the joining of the second generation to the business, they requested us to prepare a new concept for all their packaging during the process of updating their brand image. Since all their packaging had been prepared by different manufacturers and with different visions, our priority in organizing these packages without brand unity was to clearly show that each box belongs to the same brand. For this purpose, we used the calm and monochrome colors that are prominent in their new brand identity. How does a household name like Royal Copenhagen utilize its legacy and history while still innovating and remaining transformative? Not resting on what has already been accomplished and keeping up with the times is essential in any business. Companies like Kodak or Nokia are examples of what can happen if one doesn’t constantly innovate. Rasmus Holm the general manager of Royal Copenhagen, joined us at our Aarhus Symposium Focus session yesterday to talk about this year’s headline: “Bridging Tradition and Transformation.” He talked about his journey and his previous roles at Adidas and Puma. One of his examples was a collaboration he worked on between Puma and the South Korean K-pop band BTS. Together, they created a shoe based on Puma’s iconic “Puma Basket” silhouette with BTS design touches. This allowed Puma to appeal to new customer groups in South Korea and around the world while remaining true to its traditional and iconic design and corporate identity. While Royal Copenhagen probably won’t launch a collaboration with a K-pop band, the iconic porcelain producer is still looking to innovate and reach new consumer bases. This could be through collaborations with artists or by giving their iconic designs new touches and twists. Rasmus Holm described Royal Copenhagen as being in the industry of laying the table. This could include creating tablecloths, glasses, or cutlery—all while staying connected to the company’s legacy and core identity, which was established 250 years ago. One memorable thought I formed and took away from this session is that very few people buy a Royal Copenhagen plate for €100 just to eat from it on a daily basis. People buy into a piece of history, an iconic brand, and a feeling. Every piece of Royal Copenhagen porcelain is signed by its artist, and in doing so, Royal Copenhagen seeks to create a personal connection between the artist and the customer. An immense potential I see in Royal Copenhagen is their ability to create long-lasting customer loyalty. Their products are known for their durability, and when setting a table, people often strive to complete an entire table set. An odd plate or cup that isn’t from Royal Copenhagen doesn’t typically match the desired aesthetic. Therefore, if a family grows, a plate breaks, or a table set is inherited, the chances are high that customers or their family members will remain loyal to the brand and keep that tradition or nostalgia alive.
