Through this photo I wish to explain to you the meaning of Philantropreneur. Yesterday I had an opportunity to meet Dr. Huzaifa Khorakiwala. He is the executive director of Wockhardt Ltd. He also serves as the trustee and CEO of wockhardt foundation. I learnt that a Philanthropreneur, is a combination of entrepreneur and Philanthropy. Philanthropreneurship is the development of the Philanthropist's role and the integration of business practices. The core objective of Philanthropreneurship is to increase the Philanthropic impact of non-profit organizations through the use of corporations. Traditionally, non-profit organizations solely depended on donations, grants, or other forms of charitable giving. Philanthropreneurship differs by investing rather than donating; there is an expectation of financial profit on top of the social profit traditionally associated with non-profit organizations. Philanthropreneurs aim to achieve social change that is supposed to be both profitable and sustainable. Mum said "The path to hell is full of good intentions" i.e. having good intentions is not enough to create change. I always have this in mind at Red InnCol. However, since some time ago I am getting frustrated with the #impactassessment debate. Very often when we are asked about our impact we are keen to describe our theory of change and strategy, which we constantly refine to make sure we deliver long term positive impact. This seems to fall short for lots of people who expect to get quantitative metrics, even if these may only describe short term impacts. In some cases we have had to play this game to get into a conversation. I just finished reading Redundant Charities by Weh Yeoh and it was great to see how the author highlights this as a major issue for #nonprofits nowadays. As the authors says "Accepted timelines to deliver results are shortening. It is not uncommon for a #charity to have to scope out a community, do a needs assessment, come up with a plan in consultation with said community, deliver the plan and evaluate the (hopefully highly successful) intervention - all within 12 months." It is like if #startups were suddenly required to be profitable within 12 months. There are bad startups, as there are bad charities, but I have never heard of one #startup that changes the world after 12 months only. It takes more time to create change, the key thing is always having in mind the deadline to be redundant. "Traditional non-profits use measurements of success that are meaningless and short-term.
