We so desperately need more studies on university contextual admissions. We know that students who enrol with lower entry grades are as likely to secure degrees. But amid wider school divides, more evidence is needed to develop best practice on which specific indicators and practices should be best used for admissions to help widen access into universities. https://lnkd.in/eZPZhktK

During the COVID-19 pandemic, universities across the country dropped requirements for incoming students to take #admissions tests such as the #SAT or #ACT. Yet it has taken until now for research to begin to disentangle what effect these policies are having on the makeup of incoming classes, how those classes are faring, and the support they are receiving from their schools. Our team's report, published this week in the Journal of Postsecondary Student Success (article link: https://lnkd.in/g9CU4dAj) reviews 12 recent studies and finds the following: Key takeaways: Applicant pools. Results are mixed on whether test-optional policies increase enrollment or applicant quality. Equity. Context matters: Studies looking at a mix of selective public/private schools of various sizes or at liberal arts schools have not demonstrated effects on equity. Studies limited to large research universities demonstrate more positive effects on equity. Other considerations. Schools admitting more diverse classes may not be adequately supporting them. Schools may be admitting students with higher needs, but without increasing budget to support them. Students who do not submit test scores may be disadvantaged in securing funding. Bottom line. Pursuing test-optional admissions policies is not a “magic bullet” for equity. It is likely to have different effects based on timing of adoption, level of diversity prior to adoption, and institution type. Furthermore, it is unlikely to succeed without a larger institutional effort to improve equity, that includes efforts to ensure retention and completion. Application Tip ➡ Rolling Admission! Rolling admission is a type of college or university admissions process where applications are reviewed as they are received, rather than waiting for a specific deadline. In a rolling admission process, schools evaluate applications on an ongoing basis and make decisions continuously until all available spots are filled. Key Points about Rolling Admission: Flexible Deadlines ➡ Unlike regular admission processes with strict deadlines, rolling admission allows students to submit their applications anytime within a broad timeframe, often starting in the fall and continuing into the spring. Early Notification ➡ Applicants usually receive their admission decision relatively soon after applying, often within a few weeks. This can reduce the stress of waiting for a decision. First-Come, First-Served Basis ➡ Since spaces are filled as applications are reviewed, applying earlier increases your chances of being admitted and receiving financial aid or housing options. Not All Schools Offer It ➡ Rolling admission is often used by less competitive colleges and universities but offers a nice option to know you have an acceptance early in the college process. . I am passionate about working with my clients to guide the process, which includes informing parents and empowering students.
