🚨 20% of household food waste is linked to confusion over date labeling terms. Yesterday, the USDA and FDA took a proactive step to tackle this issue by issuing a Request for Information on food date labeling practices, consumer perceptions, and their impact on food waste and household expenses. This initiative paves the way for potential federal policies, such as the proposed Food Date Labeling Act — which Littlefoot helped guide and amplify through our client work with #Unilever — aimed at standardizing date labels and reducing unnecessary food waste. By addressing consumer confusion and supporting informed policymaking, this effort could be a game-changer for food waste reduction and sustainability. 🌎 More info here: https://lnkd.in/gZEgG4FS #FoodWaste #Sustainability #FoodPolicy #FoodSystems

Stop Food Loss and Waste. For the people. For the planet. In light of the International day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on Sunday, 29th September, it is important to understand food loss and waste in the industry and how this relates to food safety and sustainability. Food loss occurs before the food reaches the consumer as a result of issues in the supply chain (production, processing, storage, and distribution phases). Food waste refers to food that is fit for consumption, but consciously discarded at the retail or consumption levels. The world wasted 1.05 billion tonnes of food in the year 2022. This means that 19% of the food available to consumers is wasted at the retail, food service and household levels. In addition, 13% of food is lost along the supply chain, from post-harvest up to (but not including) retail. FSSC 22000 V6 Additional Requirements, clause 2.5.16 talks about food loss and waste. This requirement is applicable to manufacturing, transport, storage, catering and retail sectors. In addition to clause 8 of ISO 22000:2018, the organization shall: a) Have a documented policy and objectives detailing the organization’s strategy to reduce food loss and waste within their organization and the related supply chain. b) Have controls in place to manage products donated to not-for-profit organizations, employees, and other organizations; and ensure that these products are safe to consume. c) Manage surplus products or by-products intended as animal feed/food to prevent contamination of these products. d) These processes shall comply with the applicable legislation, be kept up to date, and not have a negative impact on food safety. By implementing this, the organization will reduce it's food loss and waste, meet FSSC 22000 V6 requirements and contribute towards the achievement of sustainable development goals. #fssc #foodloss #foodwaste #foodsafety #sustainability

Ensuring ingredient traceability relies on multiple crucial factors, including establishing enduring and sustainable connections with farmers and suppliers, precise data gathering and record-keeping practices, and the specific type of raw material required. These factors are essential in avoiding food recalls and ensuring the safety and well-being of the food we consume. #Ingredients #Traceability #DairyIngredients https://brnw.ch/21wLhhj

NEW: California just passed a resolution calling on the federal government to address food date labels. 💡 Key context: Food date labels are not federally regulated, except for those on infant formula. 💬 What that means: Right now, there is a patchwork of state laws requiring different phrases (there are currently almost 60 in use!) on different products, and some states have no date label requirements at all. Confusion over date labels is responsible for 6.5M tons of wasted food each year. 👍 The good news: California Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin is authoring a bill (AB 660) aiming to fix the issue for food sold within the state. If passed, it would standardize consumer-facing date labels to either "BEST If Used By" to indicate optimal freshness and quality or “USE By” to indicate the discard date. While we're thrilled to see this incredible stride towards preventing food waste, the Zero Food Waste Coalition also knows this issue extends beyond state borders and requires the entire nation to act. That's why we've been advocating for the Food Date Labeling Act to pass at the federal level for over a year—and will continue to do so. Today is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. How can biosolutions help reduce food waste? Every year, more than 1 billion tons of food is wasted, equaling about one third of all food produced for human consumption in the world. Join us to help create awareness of solutions to this global issue. Addressing food waste requires a long-term, multidisciplinary strategy that focuses on both food quality and consumer behavior. One example where our biosolutions have an impact is within dairy products. Fermented dairy products like yogurt and cheese remain safe and nutritious even at the end of their shelf life. However, due to 'use by date' labels, consumers often discard them prematurely. It is estimated that up to 10% of dairy products are wasted due to date labelling in the EU alone. By naturally extending shelf life, educating consumers on food safety and improving labeling practices, we can make significant strides in reducing food waste. Check out our suggested four steps to prevent food waste in the illustration. If you are interested to learn more about biosolutions for dairy, go to our dedicated showcase page on LinkedIn here: Novonesis Dairy. Our colleagues are working on preventing and reducing food waste in many areas, including our enzyme solutions for baking that improve shelf life for bread, biscuits and flat bread. These solutions have saved an estimated 80 billion loaves of bread from being thrown away. #foodwaste #biosolutions #FightAgainstFoodWaste #novonesis
