Breakfast just got more exciting and truly is seeking out the daring champion ready to try new things! If you haven’t seen it in stores yet this Fall, two family favorite brands have joined together to make breakfast better with their latest innovation. Companies General Mills and Hormel have partnered to produce a new, sugary limited edition flavored bacon topped with cinnamon dust. This LTO combines everything consumers love about General Mills Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal and Hormel’s Black Label Bacon. As quoted by Cinnamon Toast Crunch’s Senior Marketing Manager, Brandon Tyrrell, “the combination is a no-brainer to deliver the epic flavor our fans love in even more ways”. The product will be available at select Walmart and Kroger locations this Fall and made for eating times of all occasions, specifically for snacking and pairing with other foods. The product will only be available while supplies last. The anticipation is feeding a request of fans from both the companies and the brands are extremely confident the product is just in time for the holidays and creative meal preparations. Not all innovative food is GOOD and not all GOOD food is innovative. Case in point: our son Trajan is holding in one hand a delicious piece of local pasture raised fried chicken and in the other hand an equally delicious “NOT Fried Chicken” from our friends at Life Raft Treats. Both of them are extremely good and taste delicious. One of them is also extremely innovative and includes a chocolate “bone” inside of a crispity crunchity crust. At Pod Foods we want to sell ALL of the good food from ALL of the emerging brands, but we especially want to sell the most INNOVATIVE food we can possibly find and help foster their growth ASAP. Keurig did it. So did Oatly. And Dunkin' Donuts too. They all started with a decent business. Then blew things up by listening to customers. Here’s how. → Keurig launches in 1998. Selling coffee machines for offices. They quickly move 10,000 units. But people don't just brew coffee at work. They do it at home. And they want their K-Cups. So in 2004, Keurig shrinks the machine for kitchen counters. And introduces lots of new flavors. Growth explodes. Today, 33 million homes have a Keurig. → Oatly invents oat milk in 1994. Good for baking, sipping, or pouring over cereal. But growth is slow. Customers need a better reason to drink it. So in 2010, Oatly gives them one: coffee. They roll out 'Barista Edition Oat Milk'. Coffee drinkers love it. And sales get frothy, fast. In 2023, Oatly hit $783M. → William Rosenberg opens a diner in 1948. It’s called Open Kettle. He quickly notices that coffee and donuts are top sellers. People are actually buying the coffee just to dunk the donut. He drops everything and leans into that. Then he gives his diner a fresh new name: Dunkin' Donuts. Today there are 13,000 stores. ___ When customers speak, pay attention. As you can tell, we had quite a lot of products to try this time around. Very full bellies in the office, and we truly enjoyed them all. Our out and out winner is the Holy Moly Margherita Cheese dip. So very moreish! (and we're hoping to try the full trio of new dips, once Ocado have them back in stock) 😊 Honourable mentions include Tesco's Finest Sour Cream and Zingy Lime Tortillas, which paired perfectly with this months winner! Fast food chains are always on the hunt for new ways to drive sales and attract customers. One popular strategy is running a Limited Time Offer. These are items like the Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks or The McRib from McDonald's. In order to run a LTO item, culinary teams must consider operational feasibility, including ingredient availability, preparation complexity, and equipment requirements. LTO's should offer customers something that they can't get anywhere else. That means considering factors like flavor profiles, ingredient combinations, and product presentation. Balancing these elements can give fast food chains an opportunity to stand out from their peers. #menuinnovation #culinaryinnovation #LTO

Food is hard. I help companies with cost savings and supply chain improvement, often in the food industry. It's common to hear from smaller food companies that it is tougher than they thought it would be. I also hear that 'Big Food' has it easy. It does not. Spent over three years as the operations manager on the Betty Crocker business many years ago, including supporting new products/innovation. We launched a lot of line extensions that are mostly not in market any more. Wasted effort, wasted money, not innovation. Launching the 27th flavor of cake mix (true story, actual number) is not inspiring. One of the two actual innovative products I was a part of took longer to develop and launch than it lasted in market. Who wants to bake a cake and wait an hour for it to cool before frosting it? Not me. So we launched a frosting - "Pour and Frost" - that you could microwave to soften up and then pour onto your cake. Challenging formulation work. Big capital spend for a new filler and equipment to run a tapered tub. "The retailer" (hint: starts with a W) refused to put it on the shelf unless we spent even more money and shipped it in 8-ct cases (versus the standard 12-ct). Spent all our money to get it launched and didn't support it enough to get Consumers to try it. No trial, no awareness, not good. Got the consumer benefit wrong. The handful of Consumers that did try it loved it. But too late. Low sales, minimal promotional dollars, and retailers started discontinuing it in less than a year. It was gone before we knew it. That's innovation sometimes. Photo: several internet searches provided no results on "Pour and Frost" (Is that possible? Did I imagine it?) but the product looked similar to this pic. Pro tip for frosting to make your icing life easier - remove the foil lid, microwave for 15 seconds, stir, and frosting a cake has never been easier (at least since P&F was on the shelf for a handful of months). #food #innovation
