Today is Vesak (Vesākha, Vaiśākha), also known as Buddha Jayanti or Buddha Purnima. In Singapore, which is a role model of institutional diversity catering for a great variety of cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions, Vesak is an official public holiday. On Vesak Day, Buddhists all over the world commemorate the birth, enlightenment and passing away of the historical Buddha. As the Buddha's teachings, with those of a large circle of philosophers and practitioners in his line, spread from Madhyadesh (covering what now is the Nepali Terai, parts of Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar), to all corners of Asia, they were assimilated into many foreign cultures, and consequently Vesak is celebrated in many different ways all over the world. For this year's Vesak, my mind is with the Theri and the large group of female monastics and laypeople who have contributed so much to the world of Buddhist theory and praxis, but have often remained somewhat under the radar, or worse, have been all but forgotten. In the attached piece, read the stories of two of them: Muttā, who was a contemporary of the historical Buddha, and Caroline Rhys Davids (1857–1942), who was a feminist and rights activist, who in later life became the President of The Pāli Text Society, and who was, above all, Muttā's and many of her companion's translator.
